There is probably a switch in the reverse lever that shuts of the mower. It is probably a normally open switch so when you pull the lever to reverse it pushes the switch closed killing the engine. If you unplug the switch or cut the wires going to it, it would never think it is in reverse and you could always mow.

SOURCE: MTD Yard Machine does not go forward or reverse - I replaced belt

I think that the belt is not on right. if you look at the belt diagram from the top, then on the left side then the belt is hooked up to nothing. on the right side then the belt goes through the left side of the clutch pulley.

SOURCE: how do I replace the coil on a mtd yardman 15 HP

If, by coil, you are referring to the ignition armature and since you didn't specify what brand of engine you have I will give you instructions for Briggs: ((The instructions are similar with MOST engines with a few variances.))

Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug, remove the blower housing from the top of the engine (That is the half round/half square metal cover on top of your engine, this will give you access to the ignition armature:

Installing And Adjusting A New Ignition ArmatureAn ignition armature must be set at a precise distance from the flywheel. Ask your Briggs & Stratton Authorized Dealer or consult our Engine Check Chartfor the proper gap for your engine. Common armature gap ranges are .006- .010" and .010 - .014". Armatures are often packaged with a shim toassist in setting the gap. Microfiche or index cards of the properthickness also work well.

  1. Remove the old ignition armature mounting screws (image A). Then, disconnect the stop switch wire from the flywheel brake and remove the armature.
  2. Attach a replacement armature from the original engine manufacturer, using mounting screws (image A). Then, push the armature away from the flywheel and tighten one screw (image B).
  3. Turn the flywheel so the magnets are on the opposite side from the ignition armature (image C).
  4. Place the appropriate shim between the rim of the flywheel and theignition armature. While holding the shim, turn the flywheel until themagnets are directly adjacent to the armature (image D).
  5. Loosen the tight screw so the magnets pull the ignition armatureagainst the flywheel and shim. Then, tighten both mounting screws androtate the flywheel until the shim slips free.

SOURCE: i need a diagram to replace the deck belt on last

The process takes a little bit of navigation, but I'll try to lead you there painlessly.
The diagram search begins HERE.
In the center of that page, click on "LAUNCH ILLUSTRATED PARTS LOOKUP TOOL"
A new window opens and you will notice three (3) Tabs at the top-left of that page (Model, Parts and Product Line). Select the tab labeled "Model".
You will notice a Drop-down menu labled "Select Brand". Open it and choose "MTD" if needed.
Below that is "Model Search Criteria". Click the button to choose "Contains". In the box labeled "Model Name/Number" type in your model number.
**SPECIAL NOTE** Your TRUE model number is 13ao772g055 the fourth digit is the letter "o" and NOT the number zero, however, the ninth digit is the number zero.
Next, click the "Search" button and observe the findings on the right side of the page under "Details". Click open the folder labeled "Illustrated Parts Lists" and locate the page "Deck, 42 inch". Open that and you will have your Diagram and part numbers in printable format.

Hope this is helpful,
Dolf-

How do I get my mtd yard machine 14,5 hp riding mower to cut while in reverse.

hi,

usually in the shift selector theres a ground clip thats connected to the ignition, when the metal gearshift touches the clip it dies. disconnect and tape that wire going to the spring clip on the gear selector. if its hydrostatic then you will have to study the gearcase and look for wires going into it. perform at your own risk as mowing in reverse isnt recommended..

Installing lawn mower battery

I have Yardman, MTD, 13 HP, 38", 6 speed. Put in new spark plug and new battery. Started first time and successive times (2), battery is completely drained. Can be jumped and started and will mow, but when it is shut off, there isn't any battery to restart. What would be draining the battery or not allowing it to recharge????
