Apex 1020W dvd tray will not open

it is a apex dvd player (mp3 mpeg cd) found whill junking. when the button on the unit is press it ''buzzes'' then the the white round part turns a few times then stops. the laser (red) can be seen flashing a few times. taking this as good as it might be the laser ''looking for the DVD''
i have the cover off, i tryed with the button on the unit and the remote for my dvd player (both same models 1020w) NO-GO

the second thing i tryed was to press down on the round white part (top of the DVD try)
then let up---- The Tray opened all the way
but it does not close all the way

1. Is there a ''safe way'' to fix this unit so i can open the tray close it normaly to see it it will play a dvd?? Since this is a found unit from the trash i'm not too worried about messing it up, just want to see if i can make it work
