i have an HP Expresscard for my laptop and wish to hook up my vcr to the tuner in order to be able to record home videos to my hard drive then further to a dvd. I hooked it all up correctly (I hope) and the tuner card only wants to try and recognize a television connection such as cable or antenna,

You need to connect the ariel to the vcr, then the vcr to the card, using a male/female fly lead. Then I suggest putting an origional film tape into the vcr, press play on the vcr and then scan in the channels on the card. It should pick up the vcr's output of the film that is playing.
