I have a Sony KP-57WS500 57 in. Rear Projection Television with the color red tube not working i want ot know how much 4 a new one and how hard it it is ti change.

Sony does not make the tube available. They want you to remove the Red CRT with the Optic coupler and send it to them so they can remount a new CRT to the old Optic Coupler and they will send it back to you. This usually cost $300.00 to $400.00. It is a major tear down to remove the CRT and there will also ba a alignment of the convergence after the CRT is reinstalled. If you are really interested in doing this, let me know and I will do my best to give you instructions. Something else to consider is that the other 2 CRT's will likely need replacing soon. It is a lot of money to put into a older set that Sony is not supporting anymore. When you add up the parts cost alone for all three it is $900.00 to $1200.00. With the prices of LCD panels coming down in price you could replace the set for the cost of the parts alone.
I hope this helps,

What is the "blue tube"

In the older Projection sets, they have 3 picture tubes, RED, GREEN and Blue. I suspect your having the old classical case of a bad Blue tube in a Sony. I took the liberty of looking up the part number for you and it is
8-733-647-35. I also checked availability----No Longer Available and not available for back-order. I think it's time to go shopping for a new set.

How to change CRT in Sony KP-57WS500

CRT is expensive!!! Try to shuffle the electronic parts driving the CRT tubes first, it has three sets of parts, all are the same in each color: red, green, blue. Sometimes cleaning the leads or metal parts of the circuits, specially the green region, will gonna solve the problem. Do it first, it wont gonna cost you a dime, just time. [:0)

Sony KP-57WS500 57 in. Rear Projection Television

Hi Guys

Your problem here has to do with the amount of aging that happens to the three colour tubes - red, green and blue.

Blue actually ages slower than red and green. What actually happens is the green tube deteriorates and due to green being the predominant colour for brightness causes the blue tube`s flyback lines to appear - especially when switching between inputs or when the video is blanked.

No replacing the blue tube will not solve your problem as the tube is actually the best one of the three.

As someone mentioned there is a way to adjust this by removing the speaker grill assembly in front of the set. Doing the service mode adjustment with the remote is not the right way to solve the problem - you would be adjusting the colour gain and off-set values and would seriously be compromising the white balance of the set.

On the left hand side behind the speaker cover you will see a black square block with six adjustment points. Look for the one marked SCR BLUE, Switch the set to a unused input so the blue lines become visible. Now adjust the BLUE point counter clockwise until the lines disappear. A small adjustment should do it, Switch back to a picture and make sure the whites are still white.

This should sort your problem. I would however suggest asking a Sony service centre to do this for you. This is a dangerous thing to do as you will be working close to the 35Kv supply the the anodes of the three tubes.

I hope this answers your question.

Goo luck.
