Backlight working but Display still blank, what could it be?

If you connect an external monitor to the video port on your laptop, power up the monitor first and then boor up the laptop and the video information will automatically display on the external monitor. This will indicate the on-board video is functioning OK and the problem is the video connection to the LCD screen.
The video connector from the LCD screen may need reconnecting to the motherboard to restore video information on the LCD screen.

Laptop screen is black

There are a couple of reasons that a laptop screen could blank our. The first is that many laptops have the ability to output video to an external monitor or projector, such as for video presentations. In order to save battery life, there is a function key combination that can be used to blank the laptop screen. Most laptops have these "functions" on the F1-F12 keys in blue and there is an "fn" key that must be used with them to activate the function. Look for a key that has a blue "square" with vertical lines on either side of it. This is the Monitor function key. Press and hole the "fn" key, then press the Monitor function key. See if the screen returns. A corrupted video driver could also be the problem. Do you have any display when booting up? If so, try using the F8 key to get to SAFE Mode. If you have a display there, check and see if there are any problems with the video driver, or just reload the driver. The third possibility is the the LCD's backlighting source may have failed. IF this is the case, you probably have an older laptop and replacement is usually cheaper and more cost effective than repair.

Lights come on, but blank screen

Hi estees823,

If you see power lights but nothing appears on the screen, it could be a "POST" (Power-on Self Test) problem or simply LCD problem.

Here are some steps that you can try.

1. Remove the battery and the ac adapter then press the power button for at least 20 seconds to drain electric charges left from the system. (You may need to repeat this step to get it work.)

2. If above step doesn't work, try to plug in an external monitor and see if you get display from the external monitor. You may need to press the Fn + F4 or F5, depends on the key designed on the keyboard to toggle between displays.

3. If you get display from the external monitor, I'm sure your having problem with the LCD components. In this case, check and replace faulty LCD backlight, LCD cable or LCD inverter. The LCD inverter is often a culprit.

4. Try to reinsert the memory module/s (RAM) of the unit, try using one RAM at a time to see if it works. A faulty RAM will cause the laptop not to POST.

5. If reinserting the RAM doesn't help, most likely your motherboard needs to be replaced.

Hope this helps.

Laptop display goes blank after a second, not lcd inverter

I have had a similar issue with an LCD monitor and the issue was not with the inverter itself but the backlights. They can go bad and short (which is where my issue was. Once they were removed the screen was working again (the lights needed replaced).
Hope this helps!

If using the LCD screen, make sure the priority is not set on an external monitor. To do this, press the Fn function key combination to set the display priority.

if you use an external monitor:
1. Check whether the monitor is switched on

2. Check if the power cable is properly connected

3. Check if the cable menguhungkan external monitor and the notebook is connected correctly.

4. Try to set the constrast and brightness on the external monitor

Blank LCD laptop does turn on

I beleave you may need to press the function key as well as the F-4 key to bring up an external monitor.
Try holding down the Function key and tapping the F-4 key while watching the screen on the external monitor.
Is your unit within warranty, HP offer an extended 1 year on top of your normal 1 year warranty for video and motherboard issues.
Hope this has helped.

Dell Inspiron 1501

If the laptop keeps working, and you can use it on an external screen, then it is likely an hardware fault.

First perform a complete system recovery, like probably already instructed by the Dell support helpdesk. This will practically exclude the possibility of a driver or system problem.

If the problem is hardware , then you may have a faulty inverter board , a bad LCD display/LCD ribbon connection, or a faulty video adapter (integrated with motherboard).

If the problem is the inverter, then the screen will go dark, and the laptop will keep working on external display. This is probably your case.

If the problem is LCD display or ribbon cable, then the display will be blank with light on , and the laptop will keep working on external monitor.

Fault concerning video adapter usually cause the the system not to work at all, and it is uncommon under conditions described.

Check signal message when data cable unplugged. blank screen when data cable plugged

This problem is most likely to be caused by a bent or broken pin on the CRT video cable at the VGA connector, OR, this could also be caused by a damaged VGA connector on the back of the laptop. If neither VGA connector is at fault, the problem could be caused a damaged (kinked) CRT data cable, or internal damage to the VGA connector on the back of the laptop, though I suspect the problem is more likely to be external, and you probably won't have to disassemble the laptop to locate the culprit...
