Vacuum cleaner only runs when hose is inserted into Power Mate attachment, and only when switch (located on the hose unit) is set to "carpet." Does not turn on when set to "floors).
When hose is not hooked up to the Power Mate, I can't turn the unit on at all.

- Kenmore Vacum Model # 116.23512300. Vacum has power out to hose. No power out of hand control when set on floor or carpet . I tested the vacum with another hose and it works fine. Could the power switch be badfor the floor and carpet controls.- Guest

Sounds like you have a switch problem. Some of the Sears models also have a relay in them, which could be bad. The complete model isn't stated so couldn't look it up. But you can go to Sears.com, click on parts, enter your complete model number and a parts list with diagram of parts will come up.
