Kenmore canister model 116.25512 won't start

Vacuum cleaner only runs when hose is inserted into Power Mate attachment, and only when switch (located on the hose unit) is set to "carpet."  Does not turn on when set to "floors).

When hose is not hooked up to the Power Mate, I can't turn the unit on at all.

thanks for any perspective you can offer -

Sounds like you have a switch problem. Some of the Sears models also have a relay in them, which could be bad. The complete model isn't stated so couldn't look it up. But you can go to, click on parts, enter your complete model number and a parts list with diagram of parts will come up.

Yes sears has the part if you search it on their website but the switch is included with the wiring harness for the powermate handle. total with shipping is over 37.00. i just need the switch and cannot find one sold separately anywhere.

Owners manual for kenmore power-mate # 116

Greetings from GoVacuum,

I wasn't able to find the manual for the Kenmore model, however I did find the instruction manual for the corresponding Panasonic canister vacuum cleaner. Your particular Kenmore model is actually made by Panasonic for Sears, and then Sears puts the Kenmore name on the vacuum cleaner. They are identical internally, and have the same parts and components, besides the filter that is behind the bag. Sears makes Panasonic put a specially designed filter in the Kenmore's so that the customer has to go back and purchase that filter from Sears.

You can also find a parts schematic of the power head below if you need to purchase parts;

We have a Kenmore canister vacuum cleaner. the carpet cleaning attachment, I think is called the power mate has a beater that is intermittently working now

Your hose could be bad. The wires frequently go bad up by the handle switch. also could possibly be the wand, those go bad. You can check that by attaching your powermate directly to the nozzle without the wand and see if the same problem is there. Do you have the mini powermate also? the one that is usually mounted on the wand. If so plug that in directly to the hose and see if you have the same problem. If that tool works fine then the problem is in the powerhead.

Kenmore vacuum model 25614 power mate will not reset

What you see from the outside is usually a pop up button which sits on top of the actual internal switch remove the lid of the power mate as though you are cleaning the brush roll or changing the belt. Then test the reset internally. Post back to advise .

Have a kenmore canister vacuum cleaner which the power-mate parts don't work. I had loaned the vac out it came back with part of the hose smashed. I don't know if that is the problem.

The hose conducts power to the "power Mate"
There are wires running end to end through the hose and handle. If your hose is grey with hard plastic cuffs at both ends, it is repairable, but you will need to locate the Smashed parts.
If your hose is almond or gray with ribbing like miniature spider web between the corrugations and vinyl cuffs molded onto it , it is likely a non serviceable hose and needs to be replalced, Sears or a Panasonic vac warranty repair shop should be able to supply the parts.
Lesson learned, give the bill to whoever borrowed it

Clogged vacuum hose

I used a snake like they sell for unclogging pipes. I can use the snake on one end to break it up. I attach the other end to my industrial wet.dry vac and **** it clean. Sometimes I cannot imagine how it fills half a five gallon bucket of dog hair and stuff.

Model 116 hose clog?
Model 116 hose clog?
Posted by rfrazelle on Jun 23, 2008
My old canister model 116 followed with numbers 2839580 marked Kenmore 3.9 with power-mate, worked fine until the bag got overly full. I have changed the bag, cleaned the filter, and removed a nasty hair/fur/dust clog :-p from the lower metal tube of the power mate. It now has very weak suction and won't pick up anything. I suspect a clog in the grey plastic flexible tubing attached to the canister but cannot get it apart. Advice?

I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Kenmore 22313 Bagged Canister Vacuum. The best way to find a clog in an electric hose is to use a steel ball or a large marble to place inside the hose and to let it so threw as far as it can to determine where the hose clog is. Once you have determined where the hose clog is then you can use a small end of a broom handle of take an old wire coat hanger and place a hook on the end and try to pull the clog out of the electric hose – the electric hose is very expensive so try not to damage the hose in any way, shape or form. Or another way is that id you have another canister vacuum you can try to pull the clog apart by using two vacuums turned on and running. If you are successful then run the round marble or steel ball thru the hose again and the clog should be cleared. Customer Service 1-800-4-MY-HOME 1-800-469-4663
