I don't think you'll be able to. Most laptops, particularly the older ones, don't have user changeable graphics cards. On these models the only way to change it is to change the whole motherboard, this will work if you need to replace faulty graphics, but If you want to upgrade your system then it'll only work if your model was shipped with two or more different graphics chipsets.

No, your video card cannot be upgraded, it's integrated in the motherboard. The only thing you can do is to assign it more memory.

I suspect my graphics card has been swapped by my comp. guy.

Your graphics are integrated into the motherbaord, so he couldn't have changed it out on you. Your Satellite has a ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9000 IGP with 64MB shared memory.

You can try to update or rollback the driver to see if that solves the problem, or contact the guy who serviced your laptop and see if he has any ideas.

External monitor connection problem

The problem is with the laptop. The femal VGA port is slodered to the motherboard. Once the laptop's MB has been removed you'll most likely find the solder holding the VGA in place is most likely cracked/loose. The fix would be to remove the old solider & apply new.
I can't guide you through disemble, its complex. I can include a site to help you with this.
If you find this all a little too involved it might be worth taking it to a pro.

As far as I am aware, you can not upgrade the graphics in a laptop unless that laptop is equipped with an MXM type slot for graphics.
