Will not print with the PGI-5BK black cartridge.
We kept using printer for general colour printing etc, that was OK.
But even though I've replaced the black ink cartridge,(once with compatible cartridge & once with a normal one) there is nothing printing in black.
I have used all the cleaning tools etc on the machine....still nothing.
Can you help?

Printer use big PGI-5 black cartridge have pigment ink for printing text, documents or other only black pages. The little CLI-8 cartridge have dye-based ink for printing photos and other color pages. You need to replace your PGI-5 black cartridges to continue printing.
The printer use big PGI-5bk cartridge to print documents and text. When you print photos or some other pictures printer use small CLI-8bk cartridge because this cartridge has a photo ink.If you print text and it print blank page that mean the nozzle on PGI-5 cartridge is clogged.Try cleaning test on maintenance menu on printer.
Hi, this is not a solution because I don't think there is one apart from buying new inks. Epson and all other inkjet printers do this to prevent the coloured print head nozzles from getting blocked. If they are not used for a long time the ink dries up and blocks the nozzles. Epson recommends printing at least once a month with all colours to prevent this. Printing in black only option will only work if the colored inks are OK. Whenever the printer is turned on it performs a head clean, this is why the coloured inks get used over time even though they are not used for printing.
According to a service manual for a similar Canon printer, the grayscale printing should only use the Pigment Black ink PGI-5BK.
On fast it is 300x300dpi with 1 pass, standard is 600x600dpi with 1 pass and high is 600x600 with 4 passes.
On plain paper in colour it is meant to still only use the C/M/Y and again the big pigment black ink PGI-5BK, it only uses the smaller black ink once you set it to use a photo type paper in the printing settings.
This might sound really silly, but when you removed the protective tape over the cartridge, did it all come off? I had this problem once, and the tape had separated, the coloured part had come off leaving a clear film over the print head. Once I peeled that off, all was well. Hope that helps.
