Upon start-up humming and then grinding noise after which there is a scanner error message telling me to turn off printer and turn back on. Doing so does nothing.

It appears as though the printer hardware itself is malfunctioning and will require service.

Hi, below the belt that pulls the head from left to right is a 'bail bar' which the head moves along. Put a little light oiul on the bar, check for any bits of paper jammed in the mechanism which may be obstrucring the print head.
Also check that the bushes which support the print head haven't been dislodged. You can tell because there will be a strange looking doughnut type thing sitting and looking lost on the bail bar. you can usually just push this back into place on the side of the print head.

Hi,
try to turn off the printer for 5 min. and unplug the power, and then turn it on again, this worked for me, and apparently this error associated with all Epson printers,
mine is 8300
SOURCE: Scanner mechanism stuck, making loud clicking sound
I've just got this problem after a powercut, whilst it was not being used but on. If you have only had it a few months send it in warranty.
Think I will have to take this apart and see if the scanner cable/ribbon/drive belt is caught on something or been stretched too much and can be replaced at all.
Its like at one end its caught and wont move the scanning head being stuck somehow, caught on something (doubtful tho').
