Canon S3 no display on LCD screen

Hi,

I have a Canon S3. I used it in the month of Aug,2007 and then used it just few days back.I do not see anything on the LCD screen except for the icons. I replaced the batteries, tried a new sd card, reset for default settings. It clicks the pictures but does not display anything on the LCD. When I look at the clicked pictures on the computer, they are all black. I also cannot see anything even through the view finder.

I bought this Camera in May,2006. So it's just few month over an year. Could anyone suggest what could the problem be. Is there a possibility that any buttons have got pressed and shut the LCD screen of. If so what could be done. Your help is really apprecaited.

  • rickcarlson Dec 18, 2007

I am getting nothing but a black screen in both the LCD screen
and in the viewfinder. It just went black in the middle of taking some
photos. I put in new batteries. Everything else (menu, func, flash,
etc.) is working just fine. Reset to factory defaults as requested by the canon support people too.

I have exactly the same problem. How do you fix it and is it fixable??? I've done all the same stuff as the other posters.

  • Anonymous Sep 06, 2008

Same problem for me. LCD and viewfinder display icons correctly but no image is visible. This has corrected itself before but now seems to be permanent.

  • jonorobo Sep 17, 2008

    same symptoms not resolved.
I have read elsewhere that this camera is very sensitive to damp/condensation.

Same problem - see my posting below for possible solution.

    Hi,

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. Everyone in this thread said that they cannot see the display on the screen. But no one mentioned if they can actually take pictures even with the blank screen or no. As for me, it's not just the LCD display that is blank\black screen, even my pictures after I click them come out black with no image in it when I upload them onto the computer.

Does this happen to you or is it just that you don't see any display on the LCD but can click pictures and view them in your computer.

    Thank you

I have a similar problem with my Canon S3 IS. Dark/black LCD in Shooting mode. However, I can view my existing photos in Display mode. I was about to spend money to get a Panasonic TZ5. Somehow I bumped into a solution post for S2 IS. Here is the link:

I tried their solutions twice and it WORKS. My S3 is working fine now.

For the person whose screen is blank but the photos work- I had the same problem and solved it by replacing the smaller date/time battery which slides out of the larger battery copartment. The battery is a CR1220 smaller than a dime and even flatter. Hope this works for you.

I just refused to repair my Canon S3 IS with the same problem : black display and black photo. The solution, according to service repair, is replacing the zoom mechanism for 140Euro, not so far from the cost of a new camera.

I bought this camera in November 2006, and had never had problem until 2 days ago.

Similar problem: the LCD keep turning black while the icons are there. However, when I tried a few times switching strongly (with more effort, rather than a finger touch) the ON swivel button (on the upper right hand side) between "display" and "taking picture" mode, it solved, but only temporarily. It means that each time I switched it on, I have to switched the swivel button more strongly now than before.

My analogy is that, if the LCD is black, it means the lens aperture does not open appropriately; and I was right. When I looked through the lens (from the frontal side of the camera), I noted that when the LCD is black, the lens eye does not open (you can see the aperture opens and closes as you switch the ON swivel button).

I am not sure what caused this, but I think it could be humidity/condensation, as one poster above noted. I realized that though I usually put this camera in its bag; in the past 1-2 months, however, for some reasons, I have been puttting this camera (inside a microfiber bag) sitting on a desk. It just so happen that the desk is below a window and I occasionally open the window. I live on the west coast of Canada, and late summer and early fall is quite humid in here.

So, I think, I will try to absorb the dampness by putting this camera inside a plastic bag, filled with lots of silica gels pouches to absorb the humidity. I hope this will work.

    Seaker,

I did take a picture when the 'black LCD' situation happened, I forgot to mention it. When I playback the shot that I just made, it was 'black' like you had. I did not upload it onto a computer, though; but I know it was black, as I skip through various photos that were stored in the memory card.

It is obvious that the result would be black, as the lens eye (or the "shutter blades", as technicians usually would call) is not open. Imagine taking a picture when your eyes are shut!

Hope this helps. My camera is still being "dessicated" with silica gels pouches. I will update it in a few days.

  • Any_Fish Nov 07, 2013

OK... this may be a extremely out of date feedback, 5 years after I posted my note above... LOL.

  • Any_Fish Nov 07, 2013

Upppsss... press ENTER too soon. The dessication process did not help at all. So, I put my camera away and bought a new camera about 2 years later, in 2010. Whenever I brought the camera to a camera shop in Vancouver (where I used to live in Canada) they told me that it does not worth the effort to fix it. The technician cost is too expensive. So, when I had a chance to Asia, I took it to a camera shop and let them have a look. It turns out that some sort of cable that control the shutter blade (open and close) is dead. I have it replaced and serviced. After about a week, my camera works well again. However, since I already have a better and lighter camera, Panasonic Lumix (I am still use it now in 2013 after 3 years), Once repaired, I sold the camera in 2012; and it still works alright now.

SOURCE: No Display on Canon S3 LCD

I'll be perfectly honest with you guys...

The issues that you guys are describing here really sound like the kind of issues that will require Canon's attention.

---====To Seaker:
It sounds to me as though something is wrong with the digital processor of the photo matrix in the camera. You've obviously gone through all of the troubleshooting procedures. There are no modes that show just the icons but no image. (The only way you'd get a black screen with only icons is with the lens cap on.)

This sounds like an issue that only Canon can address.

If you ARE out of warranty, get around that by telling them that you DID buy it within the last 9 months and that you do NOT have proof of purcahse. If they insist on asking for it, then "try" to look for it and once again inform them that you do NOT have it.

They can't really dispute the warranty at that point if they can't prove that you DIDN'T but it within the last 9 months.

I hate to work the system like that... But I paid $400 for mine. I'll be damned if I'm going to be out the money for it! Am I right?

Anyway... That is the best advice I can give you, unfortunately.

Call them as soon as you can! Get it replaced!

---==== To Wingsfan:
Your particular issue sounds like the wiring going from the camera's internal systems to the LCD screen may have a break or a short in it. Do you see the same thing in the viewfinder when you open the LCD screen? You didn't mention whether or not that's the case... But this is just a guess.

For BOTH of you...

If you think that you can keep yourself together and composed well enough to play the system... Contact Canon's tech support and see what you can accomplish.

Remember... It's not as if you're going to get in any trouble. The worst they can do is refuse you. You have NOTHING to lose but the money you spent on the camera!

Here is their support info.

Shooting mode shows nothing.

Hello,

I just had this issue with my camera (my 15 year old son solved it for me ;-) ).

The viewfinder was active in "record" mode and the LCD was "active" because you could see a little back light but no image. The "playback" mode would let me review pictures in the LCD though so I know it is capable of showing information.

If you push the display key/button a couple of times you can see the picture move from the viewfinder to the LCD and have just a picture and or a picture and information.

So try setting the camera to "record" mode (lens comes out) and then push the "display button" which is on the back of the camera just to the right of the LCD on the lower right side several times and see if the LCD starts to work.

It could be that somehow the display button was pushed by mistake.

Canon S3 no display on LCD screen

This is a common problem that we ( in the camera repair game ) see a lot . The cause is faulty CCD sensor ( see enclosed pic from a Canon camera ) to see what I mean . Canon will repair this ( or replace the camera if they cannot repair it inside 4 weeks ) free of charge. Why does this happen ? Badly manufactured ( produced in 2002-2004 run ) sensor goes in the camera and starts outputting noise after 1 or 2 years instead of working properly for +- 10 years.8abdb4c.jpg

No Display on Canon S3 LCD

Mine was the "optical assembly"

I wrote Canon's president pointing out all these postings about this issue and how the other earlier Powershots and A models had this issue and were part of service recalls. I compared Canon to Toyota, hoping it wasn't aware of the problem despite all the online chatter. I also said I was sad I could no longer recommend buying high end Canon photo or video products to organizations any more all over them not wanting to do a $130 repair on a widely publicized issue.

Outcome. I heard promptly from a Canon rep. They paid for speed shipping to Chicago service center. I had it back in 3 days, fixed for free. The repair sheet says "the optical assembly did not operate propoerly causing no image output... it was replaced..."

Display

Hi, Yes it is possible but.... Your laptop version may either be using an NVidia or an ATI. If an NVidia, right click on any clear area of your desktop, click on Properties, (in Display Properties) Settings, Advanced, TwinView tab, Clone, Apply, OK, Yes (if you want to keep this setting), OK. Am not sure if it will work with the ATI version, right click on any clear area of your desktop, click on Properties, (in Display Properties) Settings, Advanced, Display, TV button, Primary (display only on projector) hope you have other setting like LCD + TV (display on both), Apply, Yes (if you want to keep this setting), OK. Your Canon LV-S3 Multimedia Projector's Native resolution is 800x600 max @ 1280x1024 Pixels. You may need to set your laptop to the lowest first and gradually work it up till the projector no longer can display, then back down one notch. You may also need to press on Fn + F8 a few times to check if you can switch displays: LCD, TV/projector, LCD + TYV/Projector. You can try either the S-video TV-out connector or the video connector (both at the back). Hope this be of help/idea. Post back how things turn up or should you need further information. Good luck and kind regards.
