Re: Hard drive crash
If your HD cannot be detected anymore..then there would be 90% chance that your data's cannot be retrieve. however, if it is still functional as a secondary drive but the partition is damage..try using FileScanvenger to retrieve the data.

try other usb port, or other computer and see whether the hdd is detected. If still not, try to go to device manager ( http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000833.htm ), and then assign a drive letter to the hdd. After that, try to access it from Computer, if not able to access it, format it (use quick format) and then use this file recovery program called asoftech data recovery to recover your files. http://www.asoftech.com/adr/

I used this file recovery program before, quite easy to use and works well for me.
if its your motherboard that crashed then ther is no problem with your hard disk. connect your hard disk to any other computer and you can access all the files in it.
if it is your harddsik that crashed then try recovery utilities like western digital data storege manger or any other disk recovery tool available for free. if still it fails then you can recover your data if you hand over your hard disk to the nearest service centre. but recover from a hard disk only if its very valuable. thay will charge you per MB of data recovered
As far as your computer. You should be able to get the data off it. Assuming the hard drive is okay. But as far as your external.. I'm not sure . Depends on what you mean crashed. Even if, lets say, you can't use it b/c it keeps crashing in windows. Doesn't mean that you couldn't get stuff off it. So you should be able to get your data off. "should". After that you should run checkdisk /f and have it scan those drives. If they have bad sectors it will mark them and tell the computer not to put data there. Then they should be okay to use.
Your hard drive has crashed but here is what you can probably try. Take off the hard drive. Put it into another system (a friend's computer or something) as secondary drive. See if it gets detected in the BIOS. If it does, you can try and run a application like Recover my files to try and salvage your data. Hope this helps.
Unfortunally the only solution to your problem is to replace the hard drive. To recover your files i would recomend the following software in this website: http://www.unistal.com/prevent-data-loss.html
Please let me know how it went,
