Question about Brother MFC 420CN All-In-One InkJet Printer

1 Answer

Changed yellow ink to new cartridge. Printer won't recognize.

Yesterday, having run out of yellow ink in the MFC 420-CN, I installed a brand new yellow cartridge. The printer won't do anything toward printing. The message window asks, "did you change yellow"? I pressed 1 for yes.

"No cartridge. Lift cover and reinstall ink cartridge" I did so, and got a repeat performance.

Examining the cartridge, there is plenty of visible ink in it, as there should be since it is a brand new cartridge out of the box, never printed a page.

I have repeatedly taken out and then reinstalled, reseated the yellow cartridge, but got the same messages.

What's up?

I'm the same one who made the request, and I found the solution.

I unplugged the printer, let it stand unpowered for ten seconds, and replugged. The display message told me that the cyan cartridge was also empty, and the magenta almost so. I replaced the cyan and closed the cover. It cleaned the heads, and voila, I can print!

I contacted the Brother site, the support function there. Pursuant to what I found there, I unplugged the printer for ten seconds and replugged. The message display then told me that cyan was empty, and that magenta was near empty.

I installed a new cartridge in place of the empty cyan, and that fixed it.

Tip

How to change an ink cartridge on the Brother MFC-240C

The Brother MFC-240C uses an individual cartridge for each color (black, yellow, cyan, and magenta). When one of the colors is out of ink, the printer will tell you to replace the ink cartridge. To replace a cartridge, follow the steps below.

All four cartridges are located on the right front side of the printer, behind a cover. Pull the cover forward from the side, where there is a slight cutout for you to grab. When the cover falls forward, you'll see the ink cartridge holders.

For whichever ink cartridge you are replacing, push down on the purple handle for that color. The ink cartridge holder will open and fall forward, revealing the ink cartridge itself. Push down on the cartridge holder and the cartridge should pop toward you a little bit. Grasp the cartridge and remove it.

Open the new cartridge and remove it from its wrapper. Discard the yellow cover, unless you plan to use it for the old cartridge.

Insert the new cartridge into the correct slot (from left to right: black, yellow, cyan, magenta) so that the word "brother" is right-side up and located toward the top of the cartridge. Once it is most of the way in, push the ink cartridge holder up by the purple handle until it snaps into place. Then close the ink cartridge cover.

If you were out of ink, the machine should recognize the new cartridge and perform its calibration. If it doesn't automatically recognize it, it will ask if you have changed one or more of the cartridges. Press "1" for Yes.

Once you have printed a test page with all four colors to verify that everything is working, either discard the old cartridge in the trash or save it to recycle. But don't get rid of it until you are sure the new cartridge is recognized and working.

My mfc 420 cn receives the print signal but doesnt print anything on the page, just feeds the paper

There may be an error in the printer. Try turning the printer off and turning it back on to do a power cycle on it.

Are you cartridges full? You can get blank pages to print out if you don't have any ink in the cartridges or if the ink is clogged up in the cartridge. If that is the case you may need to buy new cartridges. I buy all my ink and toner supplies from www.lasertekservices.com

They have great customer service and if you give them a call they can help you out with the problem you are having.

Hope this helps :)

MFC 420 CN says blue is empty--cartridge brand new

Alright so here is the issue. When you installed the new cartridge it should have asked you if this was a new cartridge or used and to press 1 or 2 depending on your answer. This tells the printer to reset the levels. Try taking all the cartridges out and turning the printer off/on with them still removed . Then reinstall them one by one answering the used or new question when asked. Also to take into consideration is that print cartridges have a use by date. If it is not used by the recommended date then it may read as a used cartridge or not at all. Verify this date on the packaging if still available. All else fails buy another cartridge.

I wouldn't be surprised. Since you're going to need black ink eventually anyway, put in a new black cartridge and find out.
