Question about Mtd 22" Yard Machine Push Mower

1 Answer

Rough idle MTD 20'' 3 5 hp Briggs and Stratton rough idle. The idle never smooths out when running. Almost sounds like it will stall. Trying to fix it for a neighbor. Her mother passed away and left the house to her. Looks like someone changed out the springs that are in the carb area. There is no float bowl as far as I can tell since it's right on top of the gas tank. It's getting gas...maybe an air leak? or the gap not right? any thoughts??? HELP

You were right on the money and so was my theory. We removed the carb and found the screen almost compltely plugged up. Cleaned it off and it purrs like a kitten now, and to think they thought of throwing it out for scrap metal. Runs great thanks for your help.

You are correct there is no float it is a diaphram type carb.
My suggestion is to remove the fuel tank and carb. as they are hooked as one and come off as one
Note what bolts will have to come off to do this.
Remove air cleaner first Locate the 1/2 bolt near the middle of the tank remove it
now locate the 3/8 bolt in front of the tank to the left of the spark plug and remove it
carefully remove tank and carb. assembly pulling it toward you slowly and watch what is still hooked up like the governor linkage angle tank slightly to allow linkage to come through the throttle shaft hole of the carb.
Once its removed take it to a bench with a phillips screwdriver in hand
Look down at the carb.and notice how it is fastened to the tank and remove the phillips screws that secure it to the tank now seperate carb. from the tank may be stuck pry up on it with a screwdriver to remove it.
see the rubber gasket between the tank and carb.? REPLACE IT. comes as a kit which is called a diaphram and gasket carb. kit. Clean the rest of the carb. while it is off find your kit and reverse this procedure and this should take care of your issue. Known clean fresh fuel to go back once completed.

I have a Briggs & Stratton 2 cylinder motor Model # 42A707-125201. Runs fine at high speed with the choke off, but it will not idle smoothly unless the choke is partially on (about 2/3). I rebuilt...

The fact the choke must be 2/3 applied to obtain a smooth idle indicates not enough fuel is being supplied by the carb at idle speed. Applying the choke richens the air/fuel ratio.

I suggest you revisit the carb idle air/fuel jets, air passages and any adjustments as well as checking for intake air leaks.

Vangard model 305447 type 0068 e1 code 05102611 will not say runining on rough ground

It can be several problems. It might be that the carburator is loose and when it shakes over rough ground it is sucking air and stalling. If it is something else you might try rubber mounts under the engine to take the vibrations out of it. Also check for loose wires.... there may be a wire grounding out when you travel over rough ground. look for loose connections or frayed wires that might touch metal and cause a ground
