1ec7ba32-45ac-4b07-8389-f863014e42da.jpgIt still sounds like a carburation issue. Are you sure all jets, vents and ports in carb are open? Another possibility is that the governor setting is off. The governor is the rod that comes out of side of engine and connects to throttle linkage on carb. To set governor to factory setting, push governor linkage in direction that opens throttle valve, loosen screw on governor arm and turn rod in same direction until it stops, while holding in this position tighten screw on governor arm. This is called a static setting. If this doesn't work I would disassemble carb, remove all plastic and rubber parts and soak in carb dip overnight. Picture may be different from your unit but it shows governor linkage to carb. Good luck and happy wrenching!

I have a Craftsman LT 1000. How do I remove the carb on the 17.5 hp Briggs engine. Not much space under the carb to get good grip on the screws that have locking washers/

Remove the air filter and assembly. Take a picture of the linkages on the carburetor for reference. Unbolt carburetor in one of two locations. One is at the intake pipe and two is the intake pipe from the head. With the carb in your hands you will be able to move it around to get the linkages off. Now it is free and clear in your hands. Take of the intake pipe if still there and the air filter pipe if still there and you will be holding the carb only. NOTE: If there are wires attached to the bottom of the carburetor, disconnect first.

Yes, most likely the diaphragm needs replacing. Remover the air filter. Remove the bolt holding the front (sparkplug end) of the tank to the bracket. Next remove the long bolt to the left side of the carb. Carefully remove the governor linkage from the carb. Take pictures if necessary. With the car/tank assembly on the bench, remove the 5 phillips headed screws from the base of the carb. The carb should now lift off the tank. CLEAN EVERYTHING. Be careful not to lose the small spring and screen from the bottom of the carb. Replace the diaphragm set. Not that the rubber piece goes down on the tank first, then the paper piece, then the carb. Install and tighten the 5 screws. Hook up the gov linkage and reinstall the tank. If you put gas in while on the bench, you can pre-test the primer. Just be careful where you are apraying the fuel.
Good luck!

Secondary on my rochester quadrajet 4bbl wont open up

It could be several things. It's quite possible that lack of use has made them hard to open. If that's the case then a little penetrating oil and some gentle persuasion will get them working. The top butterflies work on vacuum so you will have to push on them by hand.
It could be that the vacuum pot on the front passenger side of the carb is not working properly. It should connect by a short vacuum line to the top of the carb on the same side. Unplug the hose from one end, stick a finger over it so you don't lose vacuum. There is a long rod off the back of it that goes to the secondary's that should slide when you unhook and hook it back up.
The linkage on the driver's side should move the lower butterflies. Work the throttle linkage by hand, with the car off, and see if they will open. If they don't then liberally spray the linkage with something like WD-40 and work it back and forth. Spray both sides of the carb at the base and in the middle to lubricate the shafts for the butterflies. Work the linkage and spray and it should free up. Make sure that someone hasn't bent the tab that pushes the secondary's open, out of the way.
If the carb has been worked on lately, especially the choke linkage there are lockouts there. If the choke linkage has been taken off and put back on, these lockouts may not be in the right positions. There is a small tab that drops down when the choke is engaged but it can flop around if not correctly installed. You will need a diagram to get the linkage on properly. Most any rebuild kit for that age carb will have a picture of it.
These are your most likely problems. Hope this helps.
