The capacitor may have gone sick which means that the motor has not got enough start torque to overcome its initial inertia.

You push on the fan overcomes that and off it goes

Or the start coil of the motor has started to break down which gives the same problem.

Cheapest option is to read off the values on the start cap and get a new one from a good electrical supplier.
Avoid the dealers as they mark the price of parts up through the roof

Is the motor of a karcher K6.91M pressure washer an induction type or does it have brush contacts.

AC motors don't have brushes. They use a process to change phase (with the capacitor) to get opposing forces on the coils. This causes the magnet field to turn the motor. Without knowing what the motor make and model is and the color of the wires, I cannot say about meter readings. Change the capacitor IF THE MOTOR is humming and getting hot but not spinning.

What is this problem - Karcher 3.86 electric pressure washer: humming noise, plug gets very hot, then unit shuts down?

Your pressure washer is either not fitted with a run/stop device in which case like mine you have to switch off within a few seconds of closing the trigger. Check your model features?
The humming noise is the motor stalled out against the pump because there is nowhere for the water to go. The shutoff is caused by the safety overload switching off after overheat.
Or, it has a pressure operated run/stop which is not working. Because water and electricity don't mix, I would suggest getting more specific help. You can download Karcher manuals /spares lists online from Karcher specialists but remember electricity is the silent killer.

I have a Karcher 3.49M purchased 8/2/09. Using the washer I inadvertently turned on after changing hoses, but forgot to turn water back on; this activation lasted only a couple of minutes before I realized...

Normally when you dry run a machine you damage the pump so it would probably need changing. The motor might be Ok but for you to fix it you will need to take it to a Karcher dealer/service center.

From experiance it sometimes can be more cost efficient to purchase a new Karcher machine and get the 12 month warranty than spending money on an older machine.

Makes electrical humming noise but does not pump water

This is could be the capacitor that has failed. The capacitor gives the motor the initial kick in the right direction to get it started. You can confirm it is a failed capacitor and that the motor is still ok by flicking the fan blades with a stick in the direction it should spin just as you switch the pump on. The pump should run normally. You can get them off Amazon or ebay for around 5 Pounds (GBP)
