Hi,
If its dialing some numbers then its unlikely to be a hardware issue - make sure that the numbers are correctly specified, with the correct area code, international prefix etc and that (if needed), the option to dial a number for an external line is set correctly.
Thanks.

How do I turn the FAX mode off? Going on vacation.

Page 77 of the manual states that if you choose Option C "Answer all voice and fax calls yourself" - it will require user intervention to for the device to accept a fax. This is done by pressing the Auto Answer button so that the Auto Answer light is extinguished. The device will NOT answer at all. This means no messages will be recoded by the TAD portion of the unit. You will need to have a separate TAD or voice mail from your local phone company to save messages for you.

I didn't see it in the documentation - but I suspect that the device may reject fax calls if it is out of paper. You should try sending a fax to the device to see how it works. The last thing you would want is for the sender to think that he has successfully sent a fax to you, when in fact, he hasn't. This may allow you to use the device for calls and the TAD - which is what I suspect you're trying to do. Otherwise, simply disconnect the unit until you return.

Good luck!

Will not accept incoming faxes

Have you set the Fax to Auto-answer or is it waiting for you to manually answer the fax? Change this by pressing Setup and Press 3, Press 3 again. Press the right arrow to toggle On or Off.

Make sure that the rings to answer is set appropriately. Press Setup 3 4 to change.
If you have a PBX or ISDN converter phone system, check that you are using the correct phone jack - for phones and faxes.

Do you have a voicemail service on the line? This will force you to receive faxes manually and only when you are present.

If you have an answering machine connected to the line, check that the answering machine is not the problem by disconnecting it and trying to receive a fax. Long welcome messages can make the calling fax machine hang up early. Insufficient time between the end of the message and the beep can make it impossible for the OfficeJet to spot the fax tones; the same is true with loud messages.
If this is the problem, record your message again, keeping it short (10 seconds but speak softly and slowly).

If you have a distinctive ring on the fax line, make sure that the OfficeJet is programmed to recognize the ring (some ring patterns cannot be interpreted and you'll need to contact your phone company to change it).

Check that other computer hardware is not causing an issue (modem with auto-answer, other interference). Unplug everything except the OfficeJet and try to receive a fax to check for interference. Then reconnect one item at a time and try getting a fax again to determine which item is causing the probelm.

I hope this helps.

"no answer" on receive

If you are recieving faxes normal and you get this message once in a while its more likely someone is tring to call you via the phone or if you press the HOOK button and you press the GREEN start key the machine will go into recive and time out if it doesn't hear a fax tone within 30secs it will time out and give ypu this message.

Digital answering machine

Hi Bibi - Is this a regular land line? Is the fax machine supposed to answer if it's a fax but not answer if it's a phone call? Let me know exactly what your mothers' setup is please. It sounds to me like the fax is trying to answer all the calls and the screeching she hears is the fax machine try to handshake, or connect, with another fax machine. You've probably heard what that sounds like. Let me know the answers and if you can ask some people that called if they heard anything. Thanks.

Answering machine

I have the same machine, and as far as I know, you need an answering machine to effectively do that. Voice mail doesn't work well, according to the manual.
