If you have the MFC 5460CN this is an easy fix rather than sending it in especialy if your not covered by a warranty. I had the same problem and found the common problem is the inkjet track comes out of place. Make sure your printer is unplugged!!!

If you open the machine up as if your installing the LAN or USB cable you will find that the control panel is held in place by 3 screws, remove those and keep them off to the side or just remember that out of all the screws you remove those are the small ones without the washer.

Next uplug the wires to remove the control panel completely.

Next you want to CAREFULLY or support the lid and remove the slide hinge from the left side of the upper half.

Then remove the cover from the left side and you will find wires, and the cover on the right side and you will find your strip, unplug the wires to pay close attention to where they came from and unscrew the two ground wires.

The upper half should come away from the lower half of the MFC now and all that is left are the bigger screws from the sides, the two in the middle and the 3 screws that were uncovered when you removed the control panel.

If you look closely you will see the inkjet which goes back and forth over the paper to create the image, there is a clear plastic track....if that is not in the groove on the inkjet you are not going to be funcitonal. place the track back into the groove and reinstall all the parts in reverse order and make sure that the upper half fits perfectly onto the lower half, especially pay close attention to the right front of the machines corner where the ink cartridges are installed cause it slides into place.

Once you have it together, if you have an init error look at the wires by the ground wires that have the tiny screw and washer, the multi colored wires and the blue wires may be backwards, switch those around and that should be the end of it all.

This is a very easy machine down to that point, I would not recommend going any further into this machine if the inkjet track is in place.

I'm not sure how the clear plastic piece should fit. Currently it is flat under the inkjet and shifted to one side of it,

I have a Brother MFC-3360C printer and have an error. Clean Unable 51

Error 51 normally indicates a paper jam or a sensor problem. Check the paper path and the printer head movement zones (far left and right) for any foreign objects (even small pieces of paper). If there has been a paper jam, was the paper forcibly removed? If so, possibly one of the sensors has been knocked out of position or damaged. Dust, dirt, grease or spilled ink may also be contaminating a sensor. This is maybe one of the most elusive problems to solve..!

What is "unable to print 51"

Error code 51 means that there is due to wate ink pads which are full. You'll need to clean these pads to remove the error message. Also check for any small bits of paper stuck under the printhead (check under the carriage). Try removing the cartridges and check for any bits of paper. Before doing any of the above said things please turn off the printer and unplug it from power source.

If this doesn't work then its an issue with the purge unit. The purge unit is responsible for carriage movement on the chrome bar.

Please tell me if you need further assistance,

Unable to print or copy, see troubleshooting 51

The error means you have a paper jam or one of the sensors is incorrectly reading a paper jam. Unplug the unit and check all areas for a jam. Remove the back Jam Clear Cover and check inside there. Remove the Paper Tray and check that area and check if the PE actuator is in place behind the paper tray. Lift the scanner flatbed unit and check inside the print carriage area. Look for scraps of paper at the sides of the platen. These scraps that may be soaked with ink and difficult to see. You may need to move the print head to see both sides.

If the PE actuator is missing, contact Brother for a replacement. Put in the replacement if needed.

Close the scanner unit, replace the clear jam cover (put it on correctly) and replace the paper tray. Plug in and turn on the printer and see if the message clears. If it doesn't clear, access the Ink or Ink Management menu (either directly by a single key or through the menus). Do a test print for Print Quality (Color). If the quality is good, press 1, the up arrow or + key to select Yes. Then press the Stop/Exit button. If the print quality is poor, clean the print head.

If the jam message occurs again, check for more scraps of paper inside the unit as above. Make sure your paper meets the specifications for the printer and isn't getting excessively humid. (Paper will pick up moisture from the atmosphere so keep only the needed amount in open reams or the paper tray.) Fan the paper in the tray and then return it to the paper tray. Make sure the paper is flat in the tray and that the guides are just touching the edge of the paper.

If it still doesn't clear, the unit needs service.

I hope this helps.

My Brother MFC5840CN all-in-one printer is saying "Unable to clean" but i cannot see anything stuck in the printer and the message will not clear - what can i do?

Unplug the printer from power cord.Press and hold the "menu" button, then plug the device. You'll see on the LCD screen a "machine error" code.If this code is 40,41,49 or 4F the print head is defective. If the error is 48 - defective print head cable or circuit board. If the error is 50 or 51 there is error in Purge unit and printer require service. If the error is 46 the waste ink tank is full.Follow this:
Enter 80, then scroll down with the arrow down (round) key. You'll find an entry listed as purge count. If number is over 6000, enter 2 7 8 3.This will reset the purge count value. Then restart the printer, hopefully without the annoying cannot clean message.

Message unable to print 50

Machine Error 50 either means that there is a loose object inside the machine (usually piece of paper), or that there is a mechanical error which would need you to have the machine sent to service.

Unable to print code 50

what error code do you receive? Is it 30 only or does it toggle between 30 and 50 (watch some more 5 minutes!).

Anyway, two solution for this named errors:
1. Only error 30:
There IS some paper piece left inside the printer. Mostly could this be found on the very very left side (seeing from front as in normal use). Open scanner and have a good look into the edges. You will find a small piece of paper left there.

2. 30 and 50 (toggling)

See here same issue:
