Question about Magellan eXplorist 400 GPS Receiver

One control button not working

The zoom button on my husband's 400 isn't working.  I am trying to keep him from taking it apart and trying to "find the problem" himself.  Would you recommend taking it to a licensed GPS repair place instead?

At this point you have nothing to lose by taking it apart. If you can take it apart, clean the underside of the buttons with DeOxit. It may work.

hi - pretty sure you can take it to the manufacturer and see what they can do for you, too.

Replacement parts for Magellan eXplorist GPS

You need to be brave, but it is pretty simlple. Basically you are going to clean the rubber keypad and circuit board contacts. These contacts develop a film over time that needs to be removed. That is the main reason telephone and remote control keypads fail over time.

1. Remove the battery.
2. Remove 5 screws holding the bady together and separate the backplate from the main body.
3. Now carefully lift the circuit board out of the main body. Do not disconnect anything, but be careful with the rubber seal that fits between the back and front plates.
4. With the circuit board laying flat on your work surface, remove the rubber keypad. It is held in place over the joystick. Carefully lift it off the joystick and set it aside.
5. Use a clean pencil eraser and lightly rub the contacts on the circuit board. Do the same thing on the keypad by pushing the little knobs out where you can rub them. Blow away the dust.
6. Use a Q-tip with some alcohol to clean the contacts on the curcuit board and on the keypad.
7. When the alcohol is dry, put everything back together in the opposite order.

This should be good enough, but if it does not solve the issue, then buy a rubber keypad repair kit (an example is at and try again.

Good luck.

Zoom in button works, but won't zoom out

I had the same problem. took unit apart and used a white rubber eraser on the button contacts and also on the rubber back of the button. Cleaning the rubber back of the button seemed to be the most important part because prior cleaning of just circuit board did not seem to have any effect. Button works fine now to my surprise. I suggest cleaning the rubber back of all buttons to avoid repeating process of having to take unit apart twice

Button does not work

if you don't mind taking it apart, carefully unscrew the case and seperate the two halfs (be carefull not to break any of the wires or ribbon connections) , pull off the rubber pad with the buttons, and clean the contacts on the circuit board (you could use alcohol, or I use model railroad track cleaner that you can get at a hobby shop)

both cases could be due to a dead memory battery. these have a very tiny button battery in them to keep some memory such as GPS position. if it dies then the GPS may take longer to get a fix and data such as your last position is gone each time you boot.

Zoom in and out buttons not working properly

Unfortunately, this is a problem with the keys and their contacts with the circuit board. I have had to return mine a couple of times to get this repaired. If you're out of warranty, they have a trade-up program which is a better deal than repairing the unit.
