Starts won't stay on and won't disengage?

Stranded in a yard. Can't pull home because it is stuck in gear. Carborator is clean. Can crank with starter spray but then it shuts off.

I've noticed the starter drive gear does not stay engaged On the E-Drive starter with the flywheel if the engine does not start as in the older Prestolite style starters. Why?

Becausethe starter drive gear disengages after each starting attempt, the engine ismuch easier to hand prop should the battery be too low to provide normalstarting voltage. Though we do not recommend had-propping an engine, it doesoccasionally still happen in the field.

1995 Taurus. Starter will not disengage. Engine cranks, but will not turn over.

Find the starter relay under the hood. It may be bad and stuck so power continues going to the starter. Try a new relay Or try pulling off the small signal wire on the relay (it is from the switch), and hook battery up. If starter continues to run, the relay is bad. If starter is stopped, put the signal wire back on relay. If starter now starts operating, and key is still off, then switch may be bad .Location of relay may be at left front fender apron, in front of shock tower (like on earlier taurus models).

Its a solenoid...it engages the bendix and truck starts...bendix should retract because power to it gets shut off by ignition switch going to "run".

Only way bendix would stay engaged or get a signal to keep turning ???
Bad contacts in ignition switch...maybe ??
Start relay in under hood power distribution panel has hot or welded contacts ?

I've gotta think about this one...hope this gives some help...

I have a 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue and when I crank the car it catches, but there is a loud, metal grinding noise that I hear after. It started all of a sudden and when I pulled over, turned the car off and...

Can't be sure, but it sure sounds like a starter drive that is not disengaging from the ring gear. You need to have this checked, as a new starter is one thing, although not cheap anymore, however a damaged ring gear on your flex plate or fly wheel( depending on auto or manual trans) requires engine or transmission removal for replacement! OUCH!

Sounds like the starter failed to disengage from the flywheel after cranking. Remove the starter, as your taking it out pay attention to where the gear is located and if it is stuck in the flywheel teeth. If it is replace the starter and make sure you have it aligned correctly and everything should be good to go. This is common in starters that have become weak or when the solenoid is not disengaging correctly.

The starter for my ford 460 stays running after gear is disengaged only have power to solenoid when key is in start position when the truck is shut off one can hear the starter whining down after shutting...

There is a spring in the starter that should cause it to disengage after the electricity is removed. Double check that the electricity is removed form the starter side of the solenoid, cause that is the easiest thing to check first. Then take the starter off and have it checked for free at your local auto store. If it seems OK to them it may be the starter is not the right one for the bell housing. If it sticks in to far, the starter gear may be stuck partly in the flywheel.

1996 Geo Metro Clutch won't disengage

Hi,

In all likelihood two (2) possibilities:
  • defective clutch cable (most likely); and/or
  • defective clutch fork (least likely).
Should it be the cable, this might be of help. It is turns out to be the fork, you might need the services of a qualified professional or a dealership.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
