Question about HP Compaq 6720s Notebook

Open Question

Sometimes doesn't turn on...

About once every day or every two days this problem occurs: When the laptop is opened and the power button is pushed, the fan turns on but nothing loads. If left sitting, the fan will continue to go but nothing will load even after several minutes. Then you have to hold on the power button for about 5 seconds and the computer will power down. Pressing power again will result in the same problem.

So, I turned the computer off, and removed the battery for about 5 seconds. Then when I put the battery back in, the computer powers up fine. So, I have found a temporary solution but would rather not have to pull the battery out every time this problem occurs. Any thoughts?

    When I "turn off" the computer, this consists of me just closing the lid. Also, we typically leave the computer plugged in (with power).

    How are you turning-off the computer?
    Just closing the lid?
    Holding-down the POWER button for 5 seconds?
    Clicking START and then TURN OFF and then STAND BY?
    Clicking START and then TURN OFF and then HIBERNATE?
    Clicking START and then TURN OFF and then TURN OFF?

Check its main power regulator for the fault. If there is any loose solder terminals, this kind of fault can occur. Re-solder all the suspected solder terminals and check. It it do not help you, replace the power board as card basis.

Power Button doesn't work

I have a Dell Studio laptop and sometimes some buttons become not responsive, including the power button. As for power button, I noticed that if you hold it for a few seconds, the laptop will turn on (at least in my case). The fix that works for me is as follows:

1. Turn the laptop off;
2. Disconnect the charger and take out the battery;
3. Wait for a few seconds;
4. Open the laptop lid (as you probably closed it while taking out the battery), push the power button and hold it for a few seconds. Nothing will happen as the laptop won't have any power, but it clears some sort of electrostatic load or whatever it's called;
5. Put the battery back in and turn on the laptop.

I used this for a few times, so perhaps it'll help in your case as well.

Computer will not turn on. when power button is pushed, battery and power cord lights flash on and off. Plugging in does not help. How can I make my computer work again?

Try doing this:

1. Remove the battery and unplug the computer.
2. While there is no power connected, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds
3. Plug the computer back in, but don't insert the battery yet
4. See if it will turn on now, and if it does, insert the battery again.

Sometimes this works to drain some residual power that is still inside the machine. I've done this on a couple of machines and it has resulted in them starting up fine. If this doesn't work, you may have a more serious problem and need to have it looked at by a technician.

Sometimes when i try to turn on my compAQ PRESARIO F700 i have to hit the power button numerous times before it will power up and one it went into a reboot cycle where it would never make it past the POST....

the button that you're pushing is then pushing another button on a circuit board. Sounds like the external button that you're pushing isn't making good contact with the button on the circuit board. It may be turning back off while booting up because you've had to push the button so hard to get it to come on that it is getting stuck and holding down the circuit board button - causing it to shut off right away. I'm not guaranteeing that this is the problem, but I've seen it happen before. Some of the older Compaq's had this issue. If you have a mail-button (looks like an envelope) along the top strip by the power button, then try pushing that to turn on your laptop.

Guages when crazy. Now won't even try to start.

You likely have it repaired by now but it sounds like a classic case of oxidized battery or cable connection (sometimes mis-diagnosed as bad battery but cured with new (clean) battery)
