Problem with Magellan RoadMate 300 GPS Receiver

Poor Customer Service

Stay away from Magellan all together. Bought the RoadMate 300 last Black Friday (Nov. 24, 2006). Pretty good unit for the price, had intermittent problems connecting to the satellite. Finally went. Called Magellan in August, received a Return Authorization. They supposedly have a 14 day return policy. Well it is now almost November again and after numerous calls to Magellan still no GPS. They use outsourced phone representatives, so you can not be assured that they actually understand what you are saying and I have had a very hard time understanding them most times. After numerous promises that the replacement GPS is on the way and refusal to provide a tracking number as of today I got off the phone with them and started filing complaints with the BBB and the attorney general. Pay more and stay away from Magellan. They don't care about you once they have your $$$.

    • I have a Magellan 700 - also had numerous problems with the satelite service - often would get no signal for hours at a time. Have called several times with no satisfaction and finally bought a Garmin - much less expensive and NO issues!

Suggested Solution (3)

If the unit is not trackinf follow the steps given bellow..
NOTE: If you are trying these steps from your vehicle, it is
Recommended to follow when the vehicle is in a stationary position.
Make sure that the device is exposed to the clear view of sky.

With the antenna pointing upwards, remove the antenna and then re-insert.
Swivel it up and down to make sure its securely placed.

wait for few mins and check the signal indicator.
Still not working,

  • Turn on the unit and select any user.
  • Make sure that the antenna is in the upright position and the unit has
a direct line of sight with the sky.
  • Select 'Option' from the keypad.
  • Then select 'Configuration'.
  • Scroll down to select 'Diagnostics'.
  • Scroll down again to select 'Initialize GPS'.
  • At this point you would receive two options, 'Yes or No' - select 'YES'.
  • Now scroll down and select 'Set GPS Position'.
  • Enter your City, Street name and number at the corresponding
    prompts.

NOTE: The address that you are entering in the Set GPS Position should be the address at which you are at that point of time.

I wish I could suggest a solution, but I can't. Without repeating the previous messages, I have gone through much frustration also. In addition to not being abel to get any useful help, my Magellan 760 has developed another problem. The audio has nearly stopped working. The voice is so distroted that I can bearly understand the speech. I paid $750 for this unit just 2 years ago. Magellan tells me that there is NOTHING that they can do to fix it. Meanwhile, I talked my daughter into purchasing a Magellan 760 a month after my original purchase. Guess what? She is also having the same audio distortion problem! I think the units are defective in addition to the software. I will not purchase another Magellan.
