Hello, XP Pro detects these devices automatically and contains all the required drivers. If it is "buzzing" there is a problem, hopefully with the shell you installed it in. Try a new shell, if it works you're done, if it doesn't and you need the files from that drive then you need the help of a data recovery pro. If that is the case reply here with a comment containing your country and city and I will recommend an appropriate facility to assist you. Chris

Western Digital My Passport 1TB HDD turns on, spins up, but none of my computers recognize it. What could be the problem?

You should open the case of that HDD and put the disk into a different HDD enclosure. If only the chip is wrong which operates the HDD this should work.
Ebay link for the item you need:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-USB-2-0-External-SATA-2-5-HDD-Hard-Drive-Enclosure-Case-Red-/221264431009

In case the HDD is wrong and it is not readable by any computers, than it will cost a fortune to recover the files.
It may also be impossible.

Alternatively, You can take out the HDD from the casing and connect it to a PC over SATA. Maybe this way the hdd would work.

Buy an external USB hub that has an AC power adapter.
Your computer is not providing enough power to spin up the drive.
A self powered hub will provide the necessary power. 7 Port USB 2 0 HUB AC Adapter Monoprice com

I have a seagate Freeagent Go 500gb and suddenly it is not recognized by my laptop.

Try with another PC, If still not recognising, then You have to open the Casing of your external drive. If you have any Warrenty remaining for this Drive, then let company people fix this. if no warrenty then Remove the HDD from the casing, Connect HDD to the PC with another External casing, and backup your Data. If no ditection with this method, then your HDD is Dead. Keep finger crossed best of luck

My Fantom II Hard drive only has a red light on

Sounds like the drive has gone faulty, all you can do is take drive out of case, get USB to HDD - USB "Dongle" and hook up HDD, and see if it works on PC & USB, If YES, then Case and interface are faulty, otherwise the HDD is faulty.

Seagat 500GB Portable GO external HDD not recognised on PC

first of all you should try it on deferent pc , if its ok then that leads us to insufficient power provided through usb ports , try using back usb ports not the ON-front, and if the problem still try using dual-usb cable like thishttp://www.cooldrives.com/usb-power-cable-mini-b.html and if the external hdd doesn't work at all it might be the usb controller board inside the hdd cage needs to be changed if you cant find a similar one you may buy a new empty cage

PC won't recognize external usb HDD

You may not have installed the HDD correctly in the case... I had the same problem with my Thecus N1050 enclosure, the green power light on the enclosure would come on and the drive would spin up but my PC would not see the HDD!!??... I thought, becuase i could hear the drive spinning that i had it installed correctly but this wasn't the case, when i removed the enclosure again and FIRMLY pushed the HDD into the connector (all the way in) and connected it back up to my PC, it recognised it instantly. Hope this helps!
