OK, try this >>>>> Forget the BIOS just for the time being. Restart the laptop and as it starts press F12, this should bring up a boot order screen without having to go into the BIOS, pop the disk in if it's not already and use the cursor key to select the CD/DVD and hit enter. Hopefully it should then try to boot from the CD. If you need anymore help or advice please post back. Good luck and thanks for choosing FixYa!!

    Ok.
Go into the BIOS and set it to default settings, hit F10, save the changes and exit the BIOS.
    Try to install again.
    Please keep me posted.

Once you've replaced a hard drive, you need to use your system recovery CDs or an operating system CD to install an operating system on the hard drive.

Just putting a hard drive into a system does not make it work. You actually have to install an operating system to run the computer and software to be productive with it. If you have a system recovery disc, you can use that to get your computer up and running with all of the appropriate drivers for your hardware and all of the preconfigured software you had when you originally purchased the computer. Otherwise, you need to install some version of Windows or Linux or Solaris, or FreeBSD or any other operating system on it.

Go into Device Manager and select Disk Management. Scroll through the list of drives until you find one that is that has no details listed for it. Right-click on it and select Initialize DIsk. Once it is initialized, you need to right-click on the unallocated space and select Create Partition. Follow the wizard to allocate all of the space for your partition. Once that is complete, right-click on the allocated space and select Format. Follow the wizard to complete the process. You should now be able to see and use the disk in Windows Explorer.

Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop (windows/xp sp3) No boot sector on internal hard drive

Hi There,

Probably the easiest way to repair/replace the boot sector is using an XP install Disk. You need to insert the disk, restart the computer, and begin pressing the F12 Key during Bootup. You should be given a Boot Menu. Select your CD/DVD drive as the drive to boot from. Let windows XP do its setup and you will halt at a screen that gives you a chance to Press R for repair. Press R. You will be in DOS mode with a cursor blinking. Type FIXBOOT and press the enter key. Follow the propmpts.

If this does not fix your boot sector, go through the same whole process again but at the cursor type in FIXMBR and hit the entr key. This is to repair the Master Boot Record.

If neither of these tools get you booted back into Windows, then you could have any one of a number of other issues, It would be difficult to address them all in this forum.

I don't wish to be a doomsayer, but an Inspiron 6000 could easily be 5 years old, the same as the expected normal life of a hard drive.

Best of Luck.

No boot sector on internal hard drive. No bootable

Hi there,

A boot sector is a sector of a hard disk that contains booting programs stored in the other part of the hard disk. You boot sector might have been deleted or corrupted and you can't logon until you repair or recover the boot sector. To do this you must have your OS cd. Boot from OS cd the follow below steps...

Windows Vista
1. Insert the installation disc.
2. Restart your computer
3. If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc.
4. Choose your language settings, and then click Next.
5. Click Repair your computer.
6. Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.

7.

On the System Recovery Options menu, click Startup Repair. Startup Repair might prompt you to make choices as it tries to fix the problem, and if necessary, it might restart your computer as it makes repairs.

Boot from you hard disk then you're done!

Jeep Brainy

INSPIRON 6000 on start up says no boot sector on internal hard drive.

Mickey it sounds like, the system files are corrupted on the hard drive. If you have the disks, I think they are the operating system and the drivers and utilities cd. You would install the operating system cd first and then when that is all done then go ahead and install the drivers and utilities.

If you can't get the operating system to install then the hard drive is bad and would need to be replaced.

You need to run your installation/restore CD/DVD that came with the Dell. If you do not have them, you can order them from Dell for a nominal amount.

How to remove bad sectors from hard disc

I have used Spinrite 6.0 with great success. I highly recommend it! It is an investment of about $80, but will repay itself many times if you are trying to recover data (which I have done from bad discs) or 'clean up' bad sectors permanently. It is the best program I have found for this, and I have tried many,
