i had the same problem getting also an error message when i would log in about a valid definition file and go to program option page to update the definition file, after trying fixes from others i found one that said to reboot computer and put in safe mode, then open spy sweeper in safe mode, everything was in large print and nothing was turned on, so i rebooted the computer again and this time when the screen came up came up normally and not in safe mode and most of all there was no error message, my spy sweeper is now opened and now it is sweeping like it is suppose to do i don't know who was the person that posted the resolution but thanks it works so everyone try it.
I am getting the same problem that others have stated, I get message that I have 4 critical shields off and will not allow me to turn them on, I CANNOT SWEEP OR OPEN THE ALERTS.
this sounds like spyware in the registery download any spyware removal tool and run this offline then run your antivirus program and see if this gets rid of the problem if this still exists then save all files and emails out and re-install operating system.
you may need to manually update the program by going to the Options tab and click Update. If you receive a dialog box stating, "Continue, Shut Down, Restart Program" or something of the sort, click Continue using Program and it will update the definitions. then restart computer and sweep. If this doesn't work then your program may need to be reinstalled with a valid subscription key.
I have seen this problem a couple times. The only fix that seems to work is uninstalling Spysweeper and then reinstall it again. If you go to start>Programs>webroot you will see an uninstaller. Run that, reboot the computer, then reinstall again from your install disc.
Webroot has a main page where one of the tabs across the the top is 'Shields' Click on that tab and set all shields on except the e-mail one. That one makes a mess on Outlook Express. I also dropped back a few versions since the latest one kept yakking about a shortage of drive space when there was no problem. As to alerts the program will give an ' Alert' when it thinks that a sweep is overdue. I just click on 'sweep later' and minimize the alert. There are also some good anti spyware 'freebies such as AVG and SpyBot Search and destroy
