Well it WAS unknown .... after trying to add music to the player last night I gave up after having syncing errors and other similar issues. This morning I looked at the device and everything was listed as "unknown" .... decided it might me easier to start over. Apparently a BIG mistake ... I formatted the device and now I have a Full device .... I went from it saying there was 5.8 G free to ZERO free. What now???
Still can't explain the unknown status of all the files on the device, but I turned the device off for several minutes and when I returned it had zeroed out leaving an empty device ready to reload anything I wanted. I guess I initially cycled it off and on too quickly.

this is what you will do, when you sync it again stop the automatic sync the click on your player on the itunes window to see its details, you will see 3 or 4 checkboxes and check manually add music or songs and ucncheck if there is any, the box that says automatically sync music, then click sync, it will start syncing again the disconnect. add songs only to the folder where itunes have got the songs so that next time you sync the ipod the songs previously added wont be erased.

It let you restore it and you still get "unable to sync as playlist on ipod has changed"? I think that the restore was an erase and install and complete re-Sync of it. I think you need to try the restore function again and make sure it completely re-syncs before trying to do anything with it.
I have the same problem with my RCA it occurs every so often. What I do is delete everything on there by useing he software that came with it and then change the mode from from MTP to MSC and back that way It formats it so Windows Media player( WMP) can see that it is really empty. Then I end the sync with the WMP and start a new sync. after that all I have to do is load the songs back on. This might not work for you since you have a different MP3, but if there is orginal software that came with it use that to delete. If you dont have any orginal software then you can still try to end the sync with WMP and see if that works.

Format - Erases Everything: Connect your Sansa player to the computer and open Windows Media Player. Click on the Sync tab. Pull down the drop down menu underneath the Sync tab by moving your cursor over the Sync tab and left clicking on the little black arrow underneath the Sync tab. Highlight "Sansa 1GB" (wording may vary slightly), and then select "Format." - this should erase everything.
Firmware Upgrade- Erases Everything: Get the latest firmware upgrade from Sansa - it updates the firmware and erases every song in the player all at once. Here's what happened: When you first synced your GoGear to Windows Media Player, you may have set up the automatic sync option. When this option is selected, Windows Media Player will add EVERY song, picture, etc from your Library on your computer to the GoGear. Now, every time you sync you device, it adds every new file from your computer into the GoGear automatically. It will even delete songs from your GoGear that were on there before. Go into Windows Media Player 11 with your GoGear connected to the computer (it will automatically sync and add new files one last time), move the mouse cursor over to the sync tab; a small black arrow will appear under the word "Sync"; click on the small black arrow and a dropdown menu will appear; select "Portable media device" from the dropdown menu, and another dropdown menu will appear; select "Set Up sync"; a window will appear with some information on your device - uncheck the box that says "Sync this device automatically"; click Finish; This will eliminate the problem of Windows always adding songs/files you don't want into your player.
