LaCie Big Disk Extreme 1TB Hard Drive - continuous beep, no power

Hi, as soon as I plug in my power supply to my Lacie hard drive there is a continuous beep sound. Does this mean my drives are dead or the enclosure is faulty? Thanks

Thanks for you response. I thought that might be the case, I'm considering buying the same drive and swapping the hard drives to see if they are stuffed or not. If it doesn't work I'll be stuck with another Lacie drive - How *** for me! I'm based in Sydney, Australia. I think getting it check will be roughly about the same of buying a enclosure, well pretty close. Thanks a bunch

Hi, Lacie isn't very forthcoming with beep codes but it definitely means one of the two. You can try moving the hard drive into a new enclosure, if it works it was the enclosure, if not the HDD. Hate to say it but warranty on these drives is a moot point the moment unique data is stored on them as you can't even diagnose the problem properly without voiding it and no drive manufacturer will waranty data. If you have no unique data and it's under warranty, send it back. If you have unique data on it that you value, take it to a local computer store and have them move the drive to a new external enclosure and test it. If it works, you're done. If it doesn't, you've confirmed that the HDD is faulty and you will need the help of a data recovery Pro. If the latter is the case, reply by commenting here with your location (country, state city) and I'll recommend a closeby facility for you. Chris

    No worries mate,

It cost $50-100 in most shops just to test a drive. If you buy a new one and the swap works it will be slightly more but you will have 2 drives, seems more cost effective. If it doesn't work you will have a new drive anyway and will not save money but can always still recover the old drive if necessary.

Should you require data recovery service I will set up the appropriate contact for you with a company I deal with in Sydney. Let me know how you make out with the swap.

My iMac does not recognize the Lacie 1tb big disk extreme external hard drive. No icon appears.

Hello,
the first step will be to verify your power supply. When it is plugged to the wall power outlet, it should be silent (no hissing or high pitch noise) and the green light should be on on the power supply.. If it is not the case, replacing it might solve your problems.
Second step is to verify if it is an interface problem. Try using a different port on the drive.
If no success, start Disk Utility and look to the left if you have any mention of a drive of 1TB. If you do, the partition of your drive might be corrupted. You can try running First Aid from Disk utility if its available, else you will need to try a partition repair software or a Data recovery program.
There are a few available that you can get a free copy to see if the data is available before you buy.

Help is it possibol to upgrade lacie big disk extreme 500gb to 1tb or 2tb. thanks. FC

Maybe. If the current disk-drive has an IDE interface, then your 500GB disk-drive already is the largest IDE disk-drive ever produced. Or, if the current disk-drive has a SATA interface, then the sky (or the thickness of your wallet) is the limit.

I have lost the external power supply for my 1TB laCie (300797U). I have another power supply that has physically the right connector, but I'm not sure if the voltages are right. The supply I have is a...

The voltages are right because hard drives use 12volts for the motor drive and 5volts for the digital logic circuits.
The only thing I don't know is the correct voltages for the various pins, there is a possibility it may not suit the LaCie.
This maybe a standard configuration for external USB hard drives, you need to check with LaCie.

La cie hard drive mount issues

I had the same problem and surprisingly, after many attempts to get the drive to mount with different connections, etc., the problem turned out to be the power adapter. If you've got the same kind of adapter on another drive, switch it out and see if your drive shows up. Good luck.
