Trying to connect from USB laptop to parallel printer

I am trying to connect a Brother HL5240 printer to a laptop using the parallel port on the printer and the usb port on the laptop. The reason for this is that the usb port on the printer is already in use connected to a PC and there is no parallel port on either the PC or the laptop. I am using a cable with a usb connector on one end and a parallel connectoron the other which is supposed to be configured to allow me to do the job. However the laptop cant see the printer with this configuration. If I use a pure usb connection it works fine.
All suggestions gratefully received with thanks

You can't have a double hook up to it,When the parallel port is used the usb port is disabled and when you use the usb port the parallel port is disable. This is done to prevent damage to the printer. You can network the laptop with the pc and print that way though

Don't know how to connect HL-2040 printer to laptop.

If the printer does not have a USB port and the computer does not have a parallel port then you will need to get a USB to Parallel print adapter. One end is USB to plug into the computer and the other end has a standard parallel port to plug into the printer. Install instructions will come with the adapter. Try any computer shop such as Best Buy, Radio Shack, etc etc.

Where is the printer port on my acer aspire 7551-2961?I did not get an user guide and am a lost senior citizen trying to communicate with my grandchild.MCV

Most printers now use the USB port instead of the older parallel ports that has several input/out pins. Some printers (new-out-of-the-box) do not come with the USB cable, therefore purchase one for your printer if it requires a USB cable. The computer should have more than one USB ports to plug into.

You are correct on your deduction.
It is the USB to Parrallel adpter. They are not reliable in the XP/Vista enviroment. I have run into this several times.

Initialization failed - Unable to acquire TWAIN-compliant device

Hello,

I have seen your message stating that "Initialization failed - Unable to acquire TWAIN-compliant device" error is received when trying to connect USB-Parallel type to your Laptop.

Well,  Printer  Panasonic UF4100, recommends to use only " Printer/Scanner Interface as Bi-directional Parallel (IEEE1284) " means you need to use Parallel cable to connect Printer to the Computer/Notebook.  You may receive some communication error messages if you are using a  "PORT REPLICATOR CABLE"( USB TO PARALLEL connector).  The error message that you have received is related to the communication error. Futher, if you use same USB- Parallel cable for long time the Printer Hardware functionality might go bad, since Printer memory gets confused and will not read or detect the Cable , since it is not a cable to use  mentioned by Panasonic Manufacturer.

Let me tell you, general functionality of Printer like Printing would work even if you use USB-Parallel cable. But it is not a case with Scanner and Fax functionality.

Hence, I recommend you to use only Parallel cable to connect your Printer to the Laptops.

I hope that this will resolve the issue for you.

You can email me at thumuvikram@rediffmail.com if you need further assistance.

Bye.
