Question about Nikon D50 Digital Camera
All of a sudden my D50 won't autofocus with AF lenses. For example I have nikkor 50mm 1.8, it would not focus. I can hear a motor trying to focus, but nothing happens. I tried other NON AFS lenses with same result, so i know its not a lens. Possibly my Af motor in D50 is broken. How much am i looking at to fix this ? Works fine if I use AFS lenses.
I too had D50 autofocus problems and ended up buying a new D300. I then learned that my issue was in the focus areas. The D50 has five focus areas. As you look through the lens, you will see one rectangle in the center and four to the top, bottom, left and right. You should make sure that the center rectangle is highlighted. Use the round thumbdial on the back of the camera to move the focus area.

Auto-focus technology on this camera is controlled by several contacts on the mount that physically mate with other contacts on your lens. It sounds like your mount may be malfunctioning due to wear and tear (if cleaning does not work). This is between $100 and $300 fix depending on which part(s) need replacement.
