I suspect the hard drive may be on its way out. unfortunately you can't see the screen.
SOURCE: Won't boot
was there any changes done to your system like upgrading anything
All your power seems to be on right
SOURCE: Inspiron 8500 won't boot - num lock and caps lock light up
Try reseating the Memory Modules. Try each module one at a time, see if the problem is Isolated to one module or the other. They may just need to be re-seated to ensure proper contact
SOURCE: Inspiron 6400 doesn't start.
On Flash Flash indicates that no RAM memory is being detected. So remove both RAM modules, insert 1 at a 30 deg angle till the gold contacts cannot be seen, then lock it in place, and see if the RAM is detected. Test both modules in both slots, see if system will boot with at least one. If no change, try a new RAM module, if still no change, replace the motherboard
SOURCE: on boot up a lock symbol with a '9' is lit & nothing else happens
the "9" inside a lock means that your Num Lock button has been pressed. If all you see is the ">" then maybe you are looking at what's called a DOS prompt, and I have no idea why that would display. Try holding the Power Switch for 10 seconds and restart your computer. Hopefully things will be better, and you know where your Num Lock key is.
A series boot problems
Aseries laptops are very good normally but don't boot up if there
is a device in the USB slot or a CD/DVD in the drive.
If it still
refuses to POST, remove the AC Adapter, remove the battery and remove
the hard drive.
Power the unit up without the hard drive and it
should complete POST and complain that there is no hard drive. If
that doesn't work remove AC adapter, ensure battery is disconnected
and remove hard drive and RAM. Try again. If it still doesn't work,
you have a mother board fault and it needs a service centre.
www.Toshiba.com will help you out.
If it does work at one of the
options, when you have closed the laptop down, replace the RAM first
and test, then the Hard Drive.
Hope this fixes your problem.
