Question about Cartier Watches

2 Answers

Cartier signature Hello, I am aware that some or all Cartier watches have the word CARTIER concealed in one of the roman numbers. I had a very careful look on my santos which was purchased in 1989 at a Cartier shop in Venice but cannot find this. Maybe not all watches bear this mark. Could you please help me to find out more about this Many thanks Bruno

My Cartier Santos has the Cartier Logo on the "X". It is spelled as CART and then IER. I also have an antique Cartier which doesn't have this secret signature. However, all Cartier are stamped SWISS Made at the bottom on the face. In the back of the watch the word "Cartier" must be engraved as well as a swan and another hallmark. All genuine Cartier movements (inside the watch) must be stamped Cartier if they are genuine. If in doubt, have the back removed and look for the Cartier signature on the watch movement. Hope this helps.

The cartier logo forms the right hand part of the 'V' on the VII numeral on my watch.

Initally it just looks the same as the V numeral until you look very closely.

Cartier Model Numbers

From what I can tell, the major differences between the watches:

W20011C4: Quartz Movement (battery)
W20058C4: Automatic Movement

W20011C4: Case Thickness - 6.7mm
W20058C4: Case Thickness - 8.3mm

W20011C4: Date at 3:00 position
W20058C4: Date at 6:00 position

W20011C4: Newer Model
W20058C4: Older Model

The W20058C4 is the older watch and will be reflected in the price, as compared to the W20011C4. However, it does have an automatic movement which is much more desirable. It really depends on your taste/budget/preference.

Be very careful about purchasing a secondhand timepiece. There are so many fakes out there. Purchase one from a recognized Cartier dealer or one that guarantees the authenticity of the watch. Do not be lured in by prices that seem too good to be true.

I want to buy a Cartier lighter but I want to make sure it,s real. How do I look up the serial number?

To look up the steel ligter serial number is very easy ,I specialize in buying and selling Cartier watches. I've seen fakes with all the correct marks and a serial number, but that doesn't mean they are legitimate. If the watch was registered by Cartier when it was sold or if it has been sent in to Cartier for service Cartier will be able to verify it is authentic, but be aware that if the watch was not originally sold in North America or was not registered when sold (fairly common) it can still be authentic. Some sellers offer the Cartier quartz model for sale and only state that the watch has a quartz movement, but fail to mention if it has a Cartier quartz movement. If it has a replacement movement in it the watch is technically authentic, but not original and is not worth as much as one with an original or a genuine Cartier replacement movement. The biggest mistake I've seen amateur Cartier buyers make is using the Cartier micro-script signature on the Roman numeral to verify authenticity. Indeed this is a good indicator, but not the best indicator as there were many Cartier watches produced prior to the technology required to make the micro-script possible and not all Cartier watches have Roman numerals for the dial to have the micro-script signature. Furthermore, the micro-script is not always located at the same place and if the dial has been refinished it may not appear at all. Another common problem is actually caused by language differences, i.e. "all original versus "authentic". A watch can be authentic without being all original. Unless someone has owned the watch since it was new and it has never left their sight it is impossible for them to state the watch is "all original" as a part could have been replaced at some point in time -- even without their knowledge. Your best bet is to buy from a reputable seller even if you have to pay slightly more money. -- Cartier_Specialist

Hello- My mother passed away and left me some personal things which include a Cartier watch. It definately looks real. It is water resistant, swiss made with blue hand dials and the number on the back is...

Michael DeVito---PLEASE STOP telling people to take their Cartier to a "watch repair shop" !! If they do that instead of taking it to a Cartier shop, they will destroy the value of the watch. Once it is opened by a non-Cartier shop, Cartier will NOT stand behind it, won't even touch it and they can tell if it's been opened by someone non-Cartier trained. A 'regular' watch opening tool will damage a Cartier. And then pop goes the weasel, the watch is now worthless. Yes, they will destroy a fake that comes in their shop, and that is their right to do so; it protects the value of all those folks who have REAL Cartiers and paid big money for them. I'm sure you mean to help, but please, please stop saying "take it to a watch repair shop; you are advising these people to ruin their very valuable watches ! Anyone who has a Cartier can 'Google' Cartier website, click on U.S., then find a store near you & call them to discuss your watch. They'll be happy to help. A tune-up for your Cartier costs roughly $65.00 in a Cartier boutique, you should do that if you've bought a used one. No, I don't work for Cartier, but I own one and despise that so much bad information is out here about these watches. A genuine Cartier is not just an investment but a responsibility. Hoping this helps someone.

It is probably -99% certain- a fake. 209907 LN 2807 is a common serialnumber used in replica Santos 100 watches.

My Cartier Santos Stainless/gold Screws watch band is damaged and needs to be repaired or replaced. Are there replacement links available? My band is about to pop out on one of the link movement...

Only CARTIER itself will solve it. There is no way you can repair it outside CARTIER. Contact CARTIER and ask what the cost would be. Be prepaired to pay a lot.

Hi - I have a ladies Cartier Santos watch and am told I need a new movement (Quartz)can anyone tell me where to get one and rough price? Kindest regards David

The only place where you are likely to get a price from is either an authorized dealer or Cartier.

I suggest that you go to "Cartier.com", select your region and then "timepieces".

At the bottom of the page you have a choice of store finder or service etc.

Saphire replacement and polish

Well if its glass you cant polish out the scratches! If that is a real Cartier watch then you need to send back to Cartier for that job. You can take it to an authorized retailer but they are going to mark the cost WAY up!!!!

The links of this watch require special tools and expertise.it's not like a seiko. you should take it to a cartier jeweler I don't think they would even charge you for that.
