Question about Toshiba 65HDX82 65" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

1 Answer

Toshiba 65HDX82 is distorted on top 6" of screen

When the TV is first turned on, the picture is completely distorted. It gets better slowly and evenly and after about 5 minutes, it becomes clear except for the top 6 inches of the screen which now stays slightly distorted. It is most visable when a banner is played across the top of the screen or close ups where faces are at the top.

Also, I purchased this TV many years ago before HD was available. Do I need a HD converter or other part in the TV or will an HD digital box from my cable company be all that I need?

Thanks,
Tony

Check the screen voltages goinfg to all three tubes. Another thing you could try is unplug the crt socket to the red and see if the other tubes stay lit . There ia a possiblity that the red tube could be over powering and shutting the others off or down.

The culprit is nearly always failure of the two ICs called STKs. They
will cost around $400 to have a repair expert do the job in your home.

The STKs are common and if you have an experienced electronics tech
around they can replace them for much less money but the tech must have
advanced soldering and IC exchange experience.

The STK ics, two of them, can be purchased on line for around $20 to $40 each.

If your TV looks 3D, warped, or distorted it likely has a convergenge problem.
If however it just looks dull, washed out, redish, or if it looks like objects on the screen have halos the fluid in the lens has soured.
You can search google for parts or you can get the parts with repair instructions from sites such as www.TvRepairKits.com

I suspect that it won't play any source that uses progressive scanning. The likely problem is the hyperboard or scaler board. This component allows the TV to switch from sandard definition TV to HD. Typically, the hyperboard will cause shaking and wiggly images especialy noticeable at the top of the screen. It will generally work better the longer its on. Expect to spend $400-500 to resolve this.

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit from the link below.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on - TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from www.TvRepairKits.com

Yep, sure sounds like a tuner pproblem my friend. good diagnosis! If you have any soldering experience and know how to work on solid state circuit boards, then you should have no problem replaceing the tuner for this set. Now it could also be a problem with the HYPER PCB assy. This is what controls the tuner and some sets the tuners on the hyper board. the complete HYPER board is avail. at http://www.partstore.com for about 165.00 + shipping. You can also check with http://ptscorp.com for a rebuilt hyper board assy. If you have no experience with TV repair PLEASE stay safe and call in a trained servicer to assist you with this problem. Good Luck
