Question about HP Compaq Presario R4000 Notebook

Random hibernating; Charging problems

I've had my Compaq Presario R4000 for quite a few years. It still runs great. I've only had one major problem, and it's quite annoying; it has gotten worse recently.
My computer has the habit of hibernating while I was in the middle of something...no messages, just a blank screen. I have it set so that when it hibernates, it comes up where I left off...which does save time, still it's annoying. The next one is more complicated. When I have the power cable connected/charging my computer, if I move the computer in any direction, it shuts down...completely. I've been able to manipulate the cord so that it still charges while I'm working, but I think something is wrong with either my power cable or my battery. Again, I've had it for a while, and I'm just not sure what needs to be done!! HELP!!

Is it possible that I could just need a new power cable?

I forgot to mention that when I have the computer on battery power, and then I plug in the power cord, the computer shuts down. Would the dc jack be responsible for this too?

Okay, I tried to run it with just the ac adaptor hooked up, and it didn't even come on. Where do you recommend to have the DC jack fixed? Do you have any idea how much it would cost?? Thanks!!

As far as the laptop turning off on you when you move it, try it with just the ac adaptor hooked up and if it still shuts completely off on you then that means the dc jack (where the ac adaptor plugs into) is loose and the connections to that are on the bottom of the motherboard and would need to be resoldered so its nice and tight. That would take care of that problem. The hibernation problem, go into the power options in the control panel and in there you can tell the laptop to not turn off the display or put the computer to sleep at all. That should take care of that problem or you can set it to a longer time, your choice.

if the dc jack is loose then yes it would still cause it to shut off cause the connection is still loose.

If you have another known good working ac adaptor you can try that as well. But I think the dc jack is the culprit and a possible bad battery but you won't know until you can charge it properly.

Try to find an electronics place in your area and explain the problem to them and ask how much it would cost to do. The solder points on the bottom of the dc jack just need to be resoldered, no parts are necessary, it would just be the cost of labor.

I dropped my presario compaq computer and it

Soorry, one has to fully dis-assemble a Presario to get to the bottom of the motherboard to replace the connector. The part only costs about $6 but it take a few hours of very careful labor to repair this.

Your power problem can be fixes. The fault is either the power connector on the laptop or the power plug which plugs into the laptop. If the power plug is faulty this can be fixed by replacing the plug and soldering it to the leads. (most likely there is a broken wire to the plug) You can check the power adapter plug with a multi-meter and observe the voltage reading as you wriggle the power plug, if the voltage fluctuates then the plug is faulty. If the power adapter is OK then the laptop connector is faulty, this can be repaired but requires the laptop to be dismantled to get at the laptop's power connector.

Compaq Presario R4000 Notebook won't boot

Seem to be a problem with your power switch doing malfunction or bad motherboard connector or your computer has been setting at hibernate mode. Check those settings going to >> Start >> Control Panel >> Power Options..........Set your droplist to "never: and also UNCHECK the hibernate mode.

Another tip, take out the battery, and see what happen (only connected with AC)

I had the same problem with mine. There is an option of "repairing" on the recovery disc that actually keeps all files and software intact. It worked for me, much better than the full re-format of the hard drive and new install of the OS.
