Question about HP Compaq Presario R4000 Notebook

1 Answer

I've had my Compaq Presario R4000 for quite a few years. It still runs great. I've only had one major problem, and it's quite annoying; it has gotten worse recently. First, my computer has the habit of hibernating while I was in the middle of something...no messages, just a blank screen. I have it set so that when it hibernates, it comes up where I left off...which does save time, still it's annoying. The next one is more complicated. When I have the power cable connected/charging my computer, if I move the computer in any direction, it shuts down...completely. I've been able to manipulate the cord so that it still charges while I'm working, but if I move it from that spot, it shuts down. I've tried switching power outlets, but that doesn't change anything. I think something may be wrong with either my power cable or my battery. Again, I've had it for a while, and I'm just not sure what needs to be done!! HELP!!

Your power problem can be fixes. The fault is either the power connector on the laptop or the power plug which plugs into the laptop. If the power plug is faulty this can be fixed by replacing the plug and soldering it to the leads. (most likely there is a broken wire to the plug) You can check the power adapter plug with a multi-meter and observe the voltage reading as you wriggle the power plug, if the voltage fluctuates then the plug is faulty. If the power adapter is OK then the laptop connector is faulty, this can be repaired but requires the laptop to be dismantled to get at the laptop's power connector.

It seems that your notebook does not have sata connection to Hard drive. Your harddrive is IDE connection. Sorry but you can't use SATA on this laptop.

I have a compaq presario r4000 will not boot up correctly

When you start it up, go to the BIOS option and select "peripheral" settings. I don't know which column its under but you want to turn the network adapter off. If that makes your Operating System come up working (And you may have to come up in SAFE mode the first time), then you can always go back and reset the BIOS to recognize the network adapter, or install a different one.

Random hibernating; Charging problems

As far as the laptop turning off on you when you move it, try it with just the ac adaptor hooked up and if it still shuts completely off on you then that means the dc jack (where the ac adaptor plugs into) is loose and the connections to that are on the bottom of the motherboard and would need to be resoldered so its nice and tight. That would take care of that problem. The hibernation problem, go into the power options in the control panel and in there you can tell the laptop to not turn off the display or put the computer to sleep at all. That should take care of that problem or you can set it to a longer time, your choice.

Compaq R4000 failed to open the window - how to fix the problem?

I had the same problem with mine. There is an option of "repairing" on the recovery disc that actually keeps all files and software intact. It worked for me, much better than the full re-format of the hard drive and new install of the OS.
