I have the replacement part for the scan button but I am unsure of how to remove the top cover for the access. Any suggestions? I've placed a call to our FST but due to the fires in San Diego they are having difficulty keeping up with their call volumes. I just need to know how to remove the top cover...the rest I believe I can figure out.

Lexmark doesn't sell or manufacture replacement hinges. If your printer is still under warranty, please contact our technical support team via phone so they can send you a replacement printer. If not, just remove the hinge and its assembly so you will be able to totally close the cover of the printer and be able to scan from the ADF.

sorry but the drum has nothing to do with the SCAN problem, only for PRINTING problems, if you have a BLACK STRIP when you scan, you must check the SCANNING lamp for obstruction (liquid paper contaminant) on the scanning window or for other debrie that prevent the scanner to scan properly is it a dual feed??? (flat bed or top load)???

Lift the cover of the sheet feeder, and clean the filter glass that the documents are scanned across. If you make a copy on the machine this will give you an indication of the quality you are sending, so perhaps make a copy first, clean glass then try again. If the quality is still bad, then you have a deeper problem, such as the LED array (lights that light up during scan) is dying, or the optics within the machine are dirty -this would require the removal of the top of the machine to access and clean -not worth the trouble. Hope this helps. please rate my solution :)
The control panel opens to give you access to the scan glass and orginal feed rollers. There are clips either side which keep the cover down with time they can become weak and not hold down the cover correctly. While the control panel cover (top cover) is open carefully bend the clips outwards a little for more pressure. Also these type of machine can also read cover open messages when there is a jam inside. Check for jams including in the drum unit.
