Hello, had this laptop for under a year. Over the past month or so when using the laptop the screen suddenly freezes and black and white blocks and stripes appear over the screen, this makes the laptop freeze and I have to turn off by taking the battery out. Any ideas of why this is happening ??

Re: Frozen screen... !
Under a year? Still under warranty? Sound like bad video processor on the mainboard.
Boot the laptop, enter bios setup... let it sit there for a while and see if it does. If it does, then its a hardware problem and not a windows problem... but I am almost certain thats a video hardware issue... check for warranty repair.

If this is a new laptop barely months old please contact the place you bought it. You will have a warranty on it, you will be able to get it replaced under warranty. It would be pointless anyone trying to help you fix it as it may void your warranty
What size hard drive is it? There is a know problem with Seagate 80GB sata 2.5 Mobile Hard Drives (example Apple Macbooks 2005-2006 had these drives), The drives were extremely faulty and several manufactures have extend their warranty's to 3 years for these faulty drives.
There is chance of serious problem with the screen of the Your laptop. This problem is often seen in case of HP laptop which are more then 6-7 months old.
So if the laptop is under warranty they(customer care) will replaced the screen for free.
If not the will charge few $ and provide you with original screen.
Please check with the vendor from where you have bought your laptop.
Hi there. If you've had the laptop under a year, then you can take it back to the place where you bought it, and they can take a look. If anything's wrong, then it can be fixed under the manufacturer's warranty, which is normally for 12 months from purchase.
One thing I'd like to ask, can you see anything behind the black screen? I ask this, as I had a friend who had similar problem, but it was a faint black, with the cursor flashing, and he could faintly see the desktop in the background. I was wondering if this was the same for you.
This is the classic signs of a Virus. You need to recover your data, format and re install your operating system. If your computer suddenly switches off when you move the computer arround then it could be your Power Jack that is faulty. Check diagnostics at: www.powerjackrepair.com
If a computer shuts itself down suddenly after 10-15 minutes it's usually down to oveheating. clean the filters and ensure that there is good airflow around the computer when you use it. you can keep an eye on temperature and control your fans with this program
Hi No otto,
On the bottom row of keys, you will see one marked Fn, in a different color. Hodl that and look at your top row of keys. Should be one with a laptop screen, and a monitor. The little graphics will be the same color as the Fn key. Tap that once, wait, see if the screen comes to life. Usually that key is set to choose "Just laptop screen, just external monitor, or both", with each tap.
