Tecumseh engine snowblower, will only run if I keep pushing the primer bulb, Why?

Take off the screw that holds the carburetor bowl on and clean the holes with a needle and blow air through them. These holes feed gas from thr bowl into the carb and may be clogged.

Yard Machine rear tine 6hp tiller that wont start.

Ok, what's happening, is your carburetor metering hole is plugged. When you place your thumb over the carb, it draws fuel through the primer circuit to feed the engine instead. What you need to do, is clamp off the fuel line, take the nut off the bottom of the carburetor bowl, and clean that nut. Look closely at it; there is a hole that goes down the center of it, and a hole that goes through it side to side towards the bottom. These make a "T" shape inside the nut. You need to make sure that these are completely clear and clean. The one at the bottom is very small, and plugs easily. You usually need a small piece of wire to clean it, such as a single strand from a wire brush. You can use carburetor cleaner to loosen it up a bit, but the important part is to clean that hole out. You also need to make sure that the float moves freely up and down while you're in there. If it sticks in the up position, it will starve fuel as well. Also look closely at the gas that came out when you did this. Was there any water in it? If so, let a bit drain out before putting it all back together.(unclamp the fuel line). Hope you have it back online soon.

Fuel Starvation - Float Bowl Carburetor
1) remove air filter assembly
*be cautious of tearing the mounting gasket. If it does tear, you HAVE to replace it. It is part of the priming system
2) remove the float bowl fastener. This is the main jet
3) carefully remove the float bowl, the rubber o-ring/gasket will not be able to be used if it is removed, you WILL have to replace it
4) using a spray 'carb cleaner'
spray up thru the center of the carburetor
spray and clean the main jet with cleaner and 'tag' wire
(tag wire is very thin, and can be used to clean the hole in the center of the main jet)
5) clean any debris from inside the bowl or carb body
6) re-install bowl and center bolt, air filter assembly

*if you need gaskets, your Briggs dealer can supply. The kit is cheaper than individual gaskets, and all the parts needed to finish the above repair are in the kit.

Carburetor is leaking through a small pin hole, this hole was made by manufacturer

the "hole" is an atmosphere vent, what is happening is the needle that shuts off the fuel to the carb when the bowl is full is not working properly, depending on model the carb repair kit that is most used to repair plastic tubed carbs is 632760b .....also be sure to flush out tank and fuel lines before adding fresh 89 octane fuel to the fuel system....hope this helps

4.5hp tecumseh won't start. replaced sparkplug and air filter and still won't start. Used starting fluid and started up but then quit.

I have a Sears Craftsman Vacuum/blower with a 4.5 Tecumseh that wouldn't start. I removed the screw on the bottom of the float bowl and cleaned both the bowl and the screw. The screw has two small holes on each side which feed gas through the middle of the screw up into the carb. There was gunk which had clogged the holes and therefore no gas was getting to the carb. Once cleaned and reattached, the engine ran fine. Unfortunately, I also took the air filter housing off the carb and one of the two screws stripped while putting it back in. Be careful when threading any screws.

The carbs are plugged. Take the bowl off the carburetor by loosening the nut on the bottom. You'll want to clamp the fuel line before you do this. That nut has a small hole that goes through the nut from side to side, and one that connects them in the center. Use a wire brush to knock all the deposits loose, making sure that the holes are clean and free of obstruction. Put it all back together, and it should run fine.

My mtd tradesman lawn mower does not run smooth. where is the idle mixture adj. screw? the engine is the tecumseh 5.5 hp model #VLV55 501029A(D)

These engines do not have an idle mixture adjustment. Most of the problems with them not running right are from bad gas, water in fuel, or carburetor jet deposits. If your fuel is ok, then you'll want to clean the carburetor metering hole. You'll want to either empty the fuel, or clamp the fuel line, but after that, take the nut off the bottom of the carburetor bowl. You will see holes both in the sides, and through the middle. Use a wire to clean these out, and some acetone or carburetor cleaner to get the rest of the deposits out, and you should be fine.

Check the fuel. Pour some fuel into a clear jar and let it set. See if it seperates due to water in the fuel. Very common problem.
