Take out the battery and then with just your charger hooked up turn on the laptop and see if it stays on. If it stays on then your battery is bad cause its shorting out the motherboard. If you still can't get the laptop to stay on even after removing the battery then try another known working charger. If that doesn't work then take out the hard drive and cd drive. If you still can't get the power to stay on then the motherboard is bad and would need to be replaced.

Laptop will not turn on

Unplug the ac adapter from the back of the computer. Make sure it's plugged to an electric outlet. check if the ac adapter light is solid green. if not. then you have to replace it.

If it is solid green, reconnect it to the computer, if the light on the adapter goes out as soon as you plug it in to the system, you need to replace the motherboard. call dell to seek your options for replacement.

Backlight of LCD turns off

Hi,
For latitude systems they have this ambient light sensor. it basically adjusts the brightness of the screen depening on room lighting. try to go to bios by hitting F2 on the dell logo. go to video and try to look for ambient light sensor. however, im not sure if your computer has that feature I have a second option for you though. based on the troubleshooting you've done, it seems that the video back lighting is affected by movement. it would be a good try to reseat the LCD cable. you can use this link to guide you in fixing the computer : http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/latd505/sm/keyboard.htm
all you need to do is to take out the keyboard with 2 screw holding it in place. the LCD cable should then be accessible. it a thick cable that coming out of the Left hinge.

Hope this helps.

thanks.
