The problems cold be to small a return air. I do a lot of cool surveys where I check the efficiency of the AC. Some people are putting in Heppa pleated filters and they realy restrict the air flow a great deal. You need at least 1.25 square feet of filter area per ton. 5 ton should have 24 by 36 return. Check to see if coil is dirty. Check air temp. across coil. From return to closest vent. Should be between 18 to 23 degress. Rusty

What is the problem when an air conditioner begins to freeze up?

Freezing up is caused by
•dirty air filter or evaporator coil(indoor coil)
•dirty blower wheel or blower fan blades
•low freon
•weak or slow blower motor
If air filter and indoor coil are clean may be low on freon. Blower wheels seldom get dirty on window units. Pull unit from window and clean both coils with a water hose. Careful not to get any electrical wet. Let dry for a while and reinstall. If it continues to freeze its a freon problem most the time.

Why is my line freezing up?

Line freezing is typically caused by lack of airflow. Low freon may be another option, but checking your filter is the first thing to check.

Rheem 13AJA30A01 freezing

You have one of three problems. First freezing can be an air flow problem. Air flow could be causes by using the new pleated air filters. The best one still blocks >35 % of the air flow. The best air filter for home ac units is still the blue mesh type Ace hardware sells. If you have a good filter then you need to check out the inlet side of your evaporator to see how clogged the air inlet is. If it is dirty the air flow is reduced and if reduced enough, the evaporator can freeze solid all the way out to the compressor. The second cause for freezing is a bad or improperly operating blower motor. The third possible cause for freezing is the metering device not functioning properly and metering to much.

Why does my gibson js5bd042ka keep freezing up

Because your unit is low on refrigerant, air filter needs to be changed, your evaporator coil is dirty, the ambient temperature is to low, or you blower is not running

HE heat pump won't talk with old air handler?

The fact is, the air handler supplies the voltage, blower, and electric heat. In order for the heat pump to work correctly, the wiring from the thermostat and heat pump need to be hooked up right to the air handler. The thermostat is what tells which component to come on. If the fan stops, but the condenser keeps going, you either have a faulty fan relay on the air handler, faulty thermostat or wiring, faulty wiring at the heat pump, or the contacts on the new unit are sticking, which is highly doubtful considering it is working now. I hope I have helped you understand this a little more. Good luck and don't let them push you around, get someone that knows what they are looking at.

The air unit is frezzing up and the air is never under 70 degress in the house! whats making it keep frezzing up?

Hi, when the unit freezes up, it is either low on freon, a plugged a/c filter, or the evaporator coil is dirty and will need to be cleaned. When the evap. coil freezes up, the blower motor can't blow air through the coil. Check the filter, and behind the filter to see if the coil is dirty, just remove the screws to excess the evap. coil on this unit. Make sure the blower motor is running up to speed also. You will know. If the coil is dirty, try and clean it the best you can and replace the filter. If it continues to ice, you will need to have the freon level checked> These are the # 1 causes of coils icing up. Please let me know how it turns out.

A/C coolant requirements, replacing both units

That is true, what the company told you, due to the gov't upping the minimum S.E.E.R rating (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) it is heavily recommended by everyone in this field to replace both. It is a lot of money in this economy to do this but your energy savings in time will pay for it, I'm a Carrier kind of guy personally and with the new tax credits the government is giving for energy saving the Carrier Infinity which is the Cadillac of A/C units, is very cheap. Plus from experience it has saved my customers up to 65% on their electric bills

Extremely long time to get cool air with 5 ton 13 seer goodman heat pump which is 3 years old.

Check your filter. Make sure it is clean. Make sure the outdoor unit is operational. (power on). Clean your condenser coil with a garden hose. If possible check your evaporator coil. If it is dirty clean it. Your furnace (or air handler) blower speed should be set on high. All of your registers (supply & return) should be open and unobstructed. Check for proper thermostat settings. If none of this information solves your problem , then your units charge needs to be checked. You could be over or undercharged with freon.
Good luck......

The contactor on the outside unit is sticking and must be replaced. The inside unit cycles off and the outside continues to run causing the refrigerant lines to freeze up.
