HP 5510 will not print using black cartridge

My HP 5510 All in One just stopped printing in black. I have tried a few things but no help.

  • Put a tiny drop of isopropyl alcohol, or bio ethanol on the opening of the printhead (remove cartridge, you will see the opening below the cartridge)
  • Put cartridge back
  • Clean print heads
  • It WILL work again!

Hi, had the same problem. HP says head not removable......it is. Lift cover while turned on to centre head.....pull power from back. Take out all screws from plastic cover, (there are two hidden under control panel which you pull towards you to remove and one hidden under HP photosmart sticker)....remove cover.....remove ink cartridges....remove two bright springs at back of head....pull head out slowly removing 3 elec connectors at same time being careful not to damage the tape that runs through it....thoroughly clean underside of head with hot water....dry completely with hair dryer ....put back together in reverse order......This fixed mine after 3 hours of reading HP's generic answers for everything that fixed nothing.

    I'm sure it will. The problem is always dry ink or no ink. HP just want to sell you a new printer.

Hey James Connaughton does that work for the HP Photosmart 5510 because i am having the same problem, it's not printing black even with a new HP cartridge. I've tried everything that has been suggested on this site and other sites, so the only option i can think of is to remove the carriage and clean it, but i don't know how, i've looked on countless website and youtude to find a tutorial on how to do it but to no avail. I did try folding a wet piece of paper towel and placed that under the carriage and ran it over that a couple of times and it cleaned a nice glob of black ink off of it but it still isn't working. This seems to be a VERY common problem that HP refuses to acknowledge as a problem and the only option they give is to buy another printer. Please clean the print heads :

Press Setup up - Tools - Clean Print heads on the All-in-One.

If this does not resolve the issue , Reset the All-in-One.

Reset the All-in-One to the factory default settings by using these instructions:

1. Unplug the power cable from printer when the printer is powered on.

2. Press and hold OK and HELP buttons while plugging in the power cord.

If issue stil persists. Contact HP.

Usually if you leave the printer off for sometime the ink get dry on the heads or some ink may leake to the sensores so take the cartrage out clean it and clean the heads with cotton swaps...see if the help and let me know

Check the date on your ink cartridge.  I bet it has expired. If you put in a "new"cartridge but it is even an HP one with an older date, it may not work.
I had my printer stop in the middle of a print job.  It was printing fine and suddenly would not print.  So I refilled the cartridge with an ink kit I had on hand and reinserted it--no go!  Then I opened a remanufactured cartridge (office depot) I had bought some time ago and inserted it.  No go, despite the fact I could see ink coming from the jets.  I finally gave up and bought a new HP ink cartridge, and it worked just fine.  But it bugged me why the new one would work and the other two that seemed just fine would not.

Later I learned that HP has a chip that reads the expiration date on the cartridges and that is what keeps those old ones from printing.  I found one trick of setting my date on my computer back to a year earlier than the exp date on the cartridge.  I saw the date on the remanufactured one I had tried earlier was 2005, so I set my computer date to today date but year 2004.  After forcing me to do print alignments several times and take the remanufactured cartridge out and put it back, I got it to print just fine.  And that 2005 cartridge that would not work earlier is what I am printing with right now.
Be advised, though, if you try the date setback, that HP printer will buck and try every way to not let you use that old cartridge.  You must say no to reflashing if HP tries to pull that on you.  And you will take out and put back that same cartridge multiple times and keep printing alignment sheets 3 or 4 times before you are successful.  But, if you persist, you can get it to work.

I think I know what is the problem. I refilled my black ink cartridge and it printed for a while, but at some point it just stopped working. The head wouldn't touch the paper. Initially I thought the printer had a problem, but then I discovered that the color cartridge still worked.I had a spare new cartridge so I changed it. Everything worked just fine afterwards. My hypothesis is that HP tracks an identifier in the cartridge and does NOT allow you to refill (I even think they simulate for the cartridge to be failing, but I still have to corroborate this). I think this is outrageous and illegal. Please let other people with the same problem know about it. So, the solution is to stop using HP products.

My hp 5510 photosmart printer will not print in black


Make sure you have run a cleaning cycle before spending money replacing anything. Sometimes the print heads will get a little dry and a color or multiple colors will stop printing. Have you replaced the black cartridge recently? Make sure you have pulled all the tape off correctly. There is an air hole that needs to be opened usually under the tape that will prevent the ink from flowing out of the cartridge. Let us know what your results are after checking the cartridge and running a cleaning.

HP 5150 Deskjet -- black printing abruptly stopped. Prints appear with color but no black. Switching black cartridges doesn't help. Clean print heads operation doesn't help. Switching computers...


There are very few things you can do, other than what you have aleady done.
I would recommend a decision on how much the unit cost and how long you have used the
printer vrs. what HP or a local authorized service center would charge to repair it.
If you have refilled ink cartridges, this is problem that can arise due to ink drying on the
print head as the black cartridge is use the most.

1 Turn on the HP Officejet, and then lift open the print-carriage access door.

The print carriage moves into view.

2 After the carriage stops moving, push down on the top of the print

cartridge to release it, and then pull it toward you out of its slot.

Note: It is normal to see ink buildup in the print cartridge slots.

3 Remove the new print cartridge from its packaging and, being careful to

touch only the black plastic, gently remove the pink tape by using the pull

tab.

Caution! Do not touch the copper contacts or ink nozzles.

Once you have removed the plastic tape, install the print cartridge

immediately to prevent the ink from drying in the nozzles.

4 Hold the black print cartridge with the HP label on top. Slide the print

cartridge at a slight angle into the right side of the print carriage.

Press firmly until the print cartridge snaps into place.

Caution! Do not attempt to push the cartridge straight into the slot.

It must slide in at a slight angle.

5 Hold the tri-color print cartridge with the HP label on top. Slide the print

cartridge at a slight angle into the left side of the print carriage.

Press firmly until the print cartridge snaps into place.

Caution! Do not attempt to push the cartridge straight into the slot.

one of it will stop printing and a message will come in
you monitor "cartridge error" and it must be replaced

My printer does print. it prints only the 1st


I have the same problem with my HP 5610v all in one. I've had it for a couple years and it's worked great until a few weeks ago. I've uninstalled and reinstalled it using my original software. Then tried to update the driver, but HP update tells me I have the best driver already. Hope someone can help us both! Could there be a virus or a glitch in the HP updates?
