Hello Crankstart. Thanks for the reply.

This is what happened. I finally got the 1TB Western Digital My Book External Hard Drive to be recognized. Now, I can't get my Maxtor Ext HD to be recognized. Both of these drives have been connected for awhile and have had no real problems.

Yesterday, I installed a printer/scanner copier from Epson NX400 and when I did that I noticed that it took the F Drive where I had the Maxtor and then it seemed that I could not recognize the Maxtor (previously F Drive) and the Western Digital External (previously G). I was able to get the Western Digital back on G Drive, but no luck with the Maxtor except for a brief moment yesterday then when I restarted the computer, it was no longer recognzed. I have tried the other open USB port and the same thing - the device is not recognized. When I was able to get it back on yesterday, I saw that both externals are healthy. It seems for whatever reason, that when I installed the Epson NX400, the drives were no longer recognized. Both drives have their respective lights on, etc

    Any suggestions?

Thanks so much for your help!

Let me add the following. I just restarted the computer and it is now once again not recognizing either Hard Drive (the Western Digital 1 TB external or the Maxtor External. It is also doesn't seem to be recognizing the ipod.. so strange. All this happened after I installed the EPSON NX400 printer/scanner/copier.

Please help if you can. THANKS!

Hi First things first, is the light on the front still coming on? If not try a new power supply or moving the drive to a new shell as the problem is either in the AC adapter or in the shell.

If the light is on it only confirms that you have power, but first try a different set of USB ports and if that doesn't work try a different computer. If it works on the other ports, no biggy, use it there. If it doesn't and works on a different computer then it's likely your registry entry for the device is damaged, get back to me if that is the case. If it doesn't work on other ports or another computer then it's likely the circuitry of either the drive or shell is damaged, take it to a computer store and have the techs swap it into a new shell(about $40). Then have them test it, if it works you're done, if not then it is the circuitry in the drive itself that is damaged and you will need to send it for data recovery if you want the files back.

Send me an update once you have tried these suggestions and let me know how you made out. If you require the help of a pro for the final steps, reply with your country and region and I will locate a reputable facility to assist you further.

I do need to reinstall driver for WD Ext HDD 1021 USB Device - wdbaau0010hbk-01. Where I can find it?

The USB HDD driver is built in on XP. If the drive is not recognized try the following;
  1. If you usually plug it into the front USB, Try the rear USB
  2. Try a flash drive in the same USB and see if it works
  3. Plug the HDD into the USB then look in Device Manager for it, Right Click and click Update Driver then select Windows Update for the location.

The only way you can check physically is to change the USB cable. The other softwares that can assist :

1. Head to WD website and download diagnostic tool that may troubleshoot the hard disk but once it is recognized.

2. Try connecting it to a different PC running Windows.

3. You can check if the HD is being detected or not in BIOS menu. If it is being detected proceed to step 1, if not then change cables. If still it is problematic then you have to contact official support from WD for this.

I fixed that problem with a WDC My Book Home 1TB in Windows 7:

The drive was recognized in computer management and in device manager but no drive letter was allocated while connected with a e-sata cable.

1.in computer management > storage > disk management
2.rightclick drive 1 or wathever the number of the WDC drive (which should be basic at this time)
3.select 'convert to dynamic disk'
4.drive should get a drive letter
5.format (warning: all data get lost, but you can download original software from wdc.com)

Succes!

The filesystem on the drive could have become corrupt. If you can run a utility on it to see if it finds any problems, that would be the first step. I would try Norton Utilities. Otherwise, try plugging your drive into another computer and see if it can recognize it.

MY 1TB Western DIgital Ext Hard Drive is not recognized

Go to add new hardware wizard. This may not come with a disk if you do have a disk it will ask you to put disk in. If you do not find it there go to the HCL directory of the western digital website for installation directions.
