Question about Sharp R-403HW Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Sharp R403 microwave internal electrical short/fire

I bought a Sharp R 403 JKF in 06. I have the same problem as the other person. When I turned the oven on it sparked and smoked a bit at the waveguide cover. It burnt a hole in the cover. II unplugged it and have not used it since. Has anyone determined if the Sharp microwaves have been recalled? Definitely my replacement microwave will not be a Sharp unless they make good on this factory defective unit. PITA

This is a simple problem & solution.

Quite often this is due to grease or food particles stuck somewhere in the cavity of the oven or stuck on or behind the waveguide cover.

The waveguide cover (also called a spatter shield) is usually about the size of a playing card and often held in place by a plastic rivet.

It can be fragile, and the metal edges of the oven behind it can be sharp, so be careful!

The cover and the metal behind it should be cleaned with a mild, non-ammonia cleaner.

If the cavity metal of the oven is chipped or charred, it will have to be sanded smooth and clean and dried thoroughly.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Builder's Square.

Since your waveguide cover is damaged, it will need to be replaced. It provides important protection for the magnetron.

Forget wiping it down, damn thing almost caused a fire at home. Ironically, it replaced the 20 year old microwave I lost in housefire only 11 months before. My answer, don't buy a Sharp

Heat: I placed a microwavable food product in my sharp carousel r-1505. there was a tiny piece of the foil still attached to the rim of the product container. upon start, the foil immediately caught...

Maybe. The presence of metallic material (foil, stainless steel silverware, etc.) in an operating microwave oven creates electric arcs between the foil and the inside wall of the oven. And this can destroy the electric components.

No! The problem is one or two bad door switches, or possibily the keypad control board.

Built-in Sharp Carousel II Microwave Convection Oven died.

There are a couple of safety thermostats in the oven to shut down power if something overheats. One is on the magnetron tube (the microwave source), the other is on the cooking cavity. These sometimes go bad. There's also a power line fuse that may have failed, or become loose in its mounting clips. These can be tested with an ohmmeter; they should all measure very close to zero ohms if they're good.

Another possibility is that the control circuit board in the oven may have failed. I have worked on several Sharp ovens where the power transformer for the board has gone bad for no good reason. If the board goes bad the oven may appear to be dead as well.

Microwave servicing is best left to professionals. If you're thinking of keeping this one, take it to a service shop (or call for home service) and get an estimate. Then decide whether to repair or replace.

Hope this has helped a little. Thanks for using Fixya!

Microwave blows fuse when turn on

If it is blowing an internal fuse it could be a lot of things.

-short in the motor
-short in one of the other components
- gunk/dust could be causing a short

If it is your house circuit breaker/fuse then either the microwave draws too much current/amps for the circuit and you should try another circuit or you already have too many things/appliances plugged into the same circuit (not necessarily the same outlet) and need to unplug one or more of them so that the 'fuse' doesn't blow.

Microwave shorting

Good Morning Greenapple,

I would need more info to tell you if you have 'solved' the problem(s).

I will tell you that ALL parts should be back in place, correctly installed.
You should STOP using the microwave until you VERIFY what caused the problem and that it will not reoccur and all parts you removed are reinstalled.

No hot cuppa tea or bowl of soup is worth a house fire caused by an electrical malfunction.

Personal injury from an electrical flash burn or the possibility of radiation damage to your body also are not worth the risk. Get a new microwave if you cannot resolve with certainty.

Microwave problem or electricity circuit problem?

It sounds like there is too much running off that one power line in the house... its starving for power which will take from where it can such as UPS fridge or freezer - other than that it could be a faulty junction box or wiring so you would probably want to see an electrician about it before there is a fire... If too much power is sucked from one wire it may get very hot!

Daewoo kor-861h, electrical smell and will not heat.

Turn if off, and leave it alone, remove it, if you can remove the unit, take it in for service, something is wrong if you smell electrical, most people for some reason can smell and identify correctly electrical or at least insulation burning smells, which means something is burning internally, not safe, fire hazard, unit needs to be repaired by qualified technician or replaced with new unit, take no chances, nothing you can do to repair this, could be a shorting transformer, or shorting power cables, but to attempt to trouble shoot this with email is a long shot, and depends on your experience expertize and testing equipment.

I wish I could give you a short easy answer, but the hazard and your safety is more important than a microwave.

Sharps microwave

The door switches go bad...little micro-switches. Check them for switching on and off. Some are closed when the door is open, some are open when the door is open. It could even be that the catch has moved out of adjustment. If that isn't the problem, you have to consider the brain board which is usually so expensive that the microwave is not worth fixing.
