Question about Kenmore Refrigerators
I have kenmore side by side refrigerator model# 106.59599993. I was cleaning the coils and noticed the following.
The fan in the back, seems to have able to scroll forward and back a little. Is this normal? My inlaws have a similar model one (2 years newer), and their fan does not seem to have a scroll.
Normally, when there is a fan i was thinking that it would NOT have scroll like the hvac units and car ones.

SOURCE: Hotpoint refrigerator not cold
There is a defrost timer that initates defrost for 30mins every 8hours of compressor run time. Take off the thermostat knob and the freezer damper knob, remove light guard. To the right of the thermostat, is the timer advancement screw it is small, and it looks like a plastic cam not a screw. you put the flat blade of a screwdriver and rotate click by click till unit shuts off (you will hear louder click and fans and comp will shut off. Now its in defrost. Wait 5mins open freezer remove lower bin look at drain hole where frost buils you shoud see the heater glowing red melting the frost. If no red glow and no heat from panel. You must go further with the diagnosis.. A solved rating will keep this expert advice coming...........

The compressor is locked up. Basically it is stuck. You can pick up at the local appliance parts store a hard start relay, Home Depot ,Lowes, or or those guys wont have it. Its not too expensive and is worth trying because your only other option is you need to replace the compressor. The part is called a kick start or hard start, the guy at the parts store will know what you are talking about. It is simple to connect and has the wiring directions on it. Sometimes this is all it takes. I have been able to get a stuck compressor to go by placing a short 2x4 on it and whack it with a hammer a few times. This is only a temporary fix though, as it will eventually lock up again, but emergency situation this saved the food. If the fridge has a fan back there make sure it works too, it may have been the original cause. Good luck.

Thanks for taking this question.
Kenmore 22 cft side by side does not have air circulation. Freezer is cold at the bottom (ranges 5-45 deg from bottom to top). Refrigerator section is 30- 60 deg from bottom to top. Thermostat is good; compressor is working; no ice deposit on the evaporator coils; condenser coils have been cleaned; defrost heater is working. I do not feel the air draft I used to notice whenever opened refrigerator door. Is it possible that the air recirculation fan not operating. Location of this fan in the refrigerator? Regards, Prem

If you are sure you have the right start relay, and are positive the start and run connections are correct, the compressor may be bad. There is an internal overload/overheat thermostat inside the compressor. If the motor windings are partially shorted out it will run for a little bit then stop. It will probably start after several hours when cooled down. The other possibility is that you have the start and run terminals reversed. If the start winding can't kick out after a few minutes it will overheat. As a final test, disconnect all wires from compressor. Plug in the box and turn it on. Make a test cord with a plug, wire and some alligator clips. One clip on one side and two clips on the other pole. Single clip goes to the common terminal, One of the other goes to the run. The last one is briefly touched to the run terminal. Just keep it there long enough for the compressor to start then remove it. Let it run for a few hours. It should cool the box down completely. It will run until you stop it as it's not using the thermostat in the box. If it works this way replace the relay again. If it stops by itself the compressor needs to be replaced. This is almost never worth it to fix.
