Question about Apple Power Mac G4 Dual Mac Desktop

1 Answer

Apple G4 MDD, dual processor. Won't power up

Computer won't power up unless connected to studio display. If I want to use a 19" LCD (3rd party) I need to power up with both monitors connected. After a short time I can disconnect the Apple Studio Display and use only the LCD. If I power down and restart fairly quickly it will power up with only the LCD display. However, if longer time has passed, the computer will not power up unless the studio display is reconnected.

I need to upgrade my iBook G4 OS X 10.4 to 10.5

You would need a PowerPC G4 867MHz or faster processor and 512MB of RAM in order to do that. You will also need to find a copy of OS X 10.5 from a 3rd party as Apple no longer sells the OS installation disc.

I would like to connect an Apple Studio Display 17" to my Macintosh Server G4. Can it be done? What adaptor is needed if any?

Apple Studio Displays connect via DVI cables. The PowerMac G4 (all versions) support both VGA & DVI. You shouldn't need any adaptors. It should just plug into the back.

It is possible you have a power supply failure. My MDD was doing the same thing unless I reset the PMU. There is a tutorial here on checking the PS - D275729F-09DA-4FBB-96B3-BEEEB2C04619.html It for a MDD, but I would think it would be useful for your situation.

Unfortunately, the manuals for these processors are no longer available. Apple discontinued this line of processors a few years ago. The most that has been available online, is mostly reviews and possibilities of purchasing the processors directly through 3rd party merchants and eBay.

Sorry man, I went through this with my Dual 2GHz G5...your logic board is dead, computer wont work till you replace it, and even that is no garantee your RAM/CPU's are in working condition, logic board failure tends to eat components like that.

Screen partical fade

The inverter cable or lvds cable may be severed. I've recently replaced a display on a Titanium for this reason. If your machine is under applecare, you should submit it for lcd panel replacement. If your machine is not covered by applecare, they may charge you in upwards of $700 for the procedure. Depending on 3rd party apple service locations in your area, you may have to source the part off your local craigslist, ebay, or a 3rd party site like www.welovemacs.com. If not, you can ship it to us in NYC.

Hi April! I don't have a solution to your problem, but I do now have exactly the same problem (and G4/display) ! I wonder if you ever managed to get it fixed? Another posting suggests the LCD inverter may be to blame. Did you investigate this at all? Best wishes Tristram
