I am trying to install dell 3300 adapter to Linksys wrt 160 N I keep getting a communication error. I am using WPA TKP > i have tried another Dell Adapter and still the same problem My laptop and desk top connect fine. I removed the printer Removed the 3300 adapter software and tried to reinstall it again

- I have followed your directions and I still have the same problem " Unable to connect to the network"

Jun 06, 2009

- This did not solve my problem any other thoughts???

Jun 06, 2009

- THe Desktop system is XP Pro I have used both wired and wireless on my desktop to try and install the 3300. I gets to the step where it sees the network it shows it active but does not connect. I am using WRT 160 N Linksys with it set to WPA TKIP and mixed mode ( B& G and have tried mixed B G & N mode)

Jun 06, 2009

- Sorry but the 3300 doesn't use the steps that you indicate. You connect the 3300 via USB to the PC and the system is the interface to the router and IP assignment

Jun 06, 2009

- The problem is trying to get the 3300 adapter working BEFORE I try to connect the printer. The adapter does not get an ip address

Jun 07, 2009

- Somehow you have not read what has I have done so far which is the first step and I can't get it to work

if you are using xp or vista the network connection in those OS will do.
are the working computers are wireless to the router?
has the computer and adapter connected to the router without the key before?  The issue is with that computer.

Is this Vista?  I have not tried doing TKP on vista.  I will try to simulate.

Hi,

Let me recap, just one more time.
Your wireless router,
You updated the firmware(most have out dated firmware from sitting in the warehouse)
Broadcast SSID
Using WPA-PSK(TKIP) Security
Mixed mode(b and g, n if available) This is needed for wireless devices to work properly.
Channels 1, 6 or 11. These channels are the channels most wireless devices work on the best(I use channel 11)
Now for the printer. Download and run this patch to completely remove the printer from your computer.

The patch is password protected. The way around the password protected zip file is to open the zip file with Winrar or 7zip(.exe file)

Restart your computer.

After router is done, now setup your wireless print server/printer.
3300 Utility
3300 Firmware
Attach the 3300 to your computer using the USB Cable and insert the 3300 disk. Follow the instructions. It should ask you for the network ID, type of security and password.
Download the proper drivers.
XP Drivers
Vista 32-bit Drivers
Install the drivers, choose network, choose I'm using a wireless print server(if you do not see this, then choose add printer and you should see it then) and follow the instructions.

Thanks for contacting Fixya

Setting up a wireless print adapter is a little bit complicated. Aside from the WPA-PSK, you need to check also the IP Address of the adapter. You have to make sure that the adapter and the router are on the same IP range. Here are the things that you need to do:

1. Write down the important information in a piece of paper:
* SSID
* WPA-PSK (make sure that it is correct. It is a case sensitive).
* Channel of the router.

2. Things to do:
* Make sure that the adapter is not connected to the router.
* Configure first the settings on your adapter.
* Check the IP Address of the adapter (make sure that it has the same IP range with the router).
* You haveto check if you need to type the exact SSID of the router to the utility of the adapter.
* Type the WPA-PSK correctly.
* Set the channel of the adapter and make sure that the adapter and the router has the same wireless channel.
* Then try to detect and connect to the router.
* If you are connected to the router, PING the IP Address of the adapter using one of your computers.

NOTE: If you were able to ping the IP Address of the adapter, check the printer settings and try to print.

Have a great day!

If the Dell Photo All-in-One (AIO) printer is already installed on a system and the Dell 3300 wireless printer adapter is added to the configuration, the network printer object is not created.

When attempting to print, the error message Communication not available is displayed.

To resolve this issue:
  1. Uninstall your Dell AIO printer driver, install the Dell 3300 wireless printer driver, and then reinstall the Dell AIO printer driver. Ensure that Network and/or Advance Install, Install printer driver, and Install printer on network are selected during the 3300 wireless adapter installation process.
  2. Verify the Dell 3300 wireless printer adapter is at the latest version of the firmware and, if not, download and install the latest version of the 3300 firmware R139145.EXE

First off - trying to make the Linksys WPS54G work on a wireless network that has a decent level of security is NOT for the faint of heart!

Key issue is security; make sure you know what wireless security protocol your router is using (WEP-64, WEP-128, or WPA). My U-verse installation uses the exact same 2Wire router, but either it defaults to WPA security, or the tech set it up that way without asking me. WPA is preferable anyway, as it is the most secure, and I had my network set up on WPA with my ZOOM X6 when we had AT&T DSL.

The problem is that the Linksys unit is old/obsolete enough that it defaults to WEP or no security, and in fact the setup program and utilities on the CD that came with the refurb. unit I recently bought are way outdated compared to the current downloads available on their support site, and don't even offer WPA as an option.

If your U-verse router is configured for WPA, as is most likely, then you have to get your Linksys unit configured for WPA security before it can be properly "seen" on the network by your computers. This means either downloading the latest setup/driver programs from Linksys's support website and burning a fresh setup CD, or getting to the Web-interface of the unit and setting it there (I could not even get to the web-interface because of my firewall and other security). Only then can you set the unit to use WPA security with the same key/passphrase as your U-verse router and your computer(s).

I'd advise downloading the latest stuff in any case. I ended up downloading the latest firmware, upgrading it on the unit using the Bi-Admin util on the setup CD, setting up the unit using the web-interface (be patient, because sometimes the page loads can be very slow when it is reading or writing settings). I have never been able to access the web-interface from my laptop, which is probably the most secure on our network. I was only able to get things working when I accessed it from an old PC we rarely use, and it is only running Windoze (XP) Firewall for security. The print server had to be Ethernet connected to the router while doing the configuration to make it work.
