Question about Samsung HLP5085W 50" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television
Recently my picture went completly, but I still had sound. Contacted Samsung but no help at all - out of warrenty! Still - I ordered another bulb. In the meantime I switched the TV on and got both sound & a picture for most of the day. In the evening the picture simply went. Replaced the bulb - still no picture so bulb problem ruled out.
Any ideas - I've cleaned up any dust I could find.
There are several things that need to take place for the lamp to turn on. first the color wheel needs to turn on ( if you can hear a whinning noise then this is fine) next the tv will send a signal to the lamp ballast to turn on, and the ballast needs the 130v dc supply from the power board ( simoly remove the lamp and reinstall the lamp door, turn tv on, and if you hear an arcing noise from the ballast you know this is fine too. the board that controls all of this is the dmd board. so if the color wheel works, ballast starts then i would replace the dmd board....

I have the same problem. It started once or twice a day then more and more More likely DMD board overheats and develops a contact or thermal protection issue shuting down the picture projection.Replacind the lamp or color wheel will not help . For that you will have a error code blinking at the front power button. This problem gives no error code ,picture just dissapears while you still can see the light working if you just look at the back of the tv.and will have sound. You can replace the board ,easy to do but the new board is expensive ,around $ 500 or put a small fan from the outside blowing inside. The best is a small square shape the one you can remove from computers and just hang to the left side of the grill to blow in air, Do not try to blow in air by the lamp door!,that's an exaust area for the lamp fan!.Keeping cooler the tv will not shut down the picture that often That's how I did .I Paid $ 2500 for tis Samsung HL-r 5067w,replaced the wheel and lamp ,with no results,,next will be to replace the whole tv as with $900 can get a new one that will be anything but Samsung DLP,why would spend other $500 for DMD board? to last an other 2.5 years? The whole tv is a technical screw up Samsung knows that the light bulb overheats the tv's light engine creating expansion, contact ,ect problems,,inside fans are not big enough to handle the heat, bigger fans would be too loud, that's why come out with LED light projector,no heat there, but I had enough of Samsung
