Question about GE GSS25SGPSS Side by Side Refrigerator

NO WATER IN FREEZER DOOR - I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM - SEE MY NOTES

According to the (3) service people I have had out to my home to look at my GSS25SGPSS frig, the water line in the door is frozen (they could not tell me why) thus, not allowing us to use the water feature in the door. Their solution? BUY A NEW FREEZER DOOR? Give me a break! They claim there is no way for them to be able to get inside the freezer door to fix the frozen line. Incredible. This is the 2nd problem we have had with this frig. The first one had the water puddling issue in the bottom of the freezer. We bought the frig from Conn's (Houston, Tx.) and they brought us a (supposedly new) identical replacement frig. Now the water isn't working. What a shame to spend this much $$ on an appliance and have so many problems. GE should be accountable and repair these issues for their customers at NO CHARGE. Obviously a manufacturer's defect!!

Okay folks, problem solved!! By the way, today is June 4, 2009 in case you're wondering when I posted this. First of all the problem with the water not dispensing doesn't apply to just my particular GE model of frig (which is GSS25SGPSS).... apparently many, many GE models are affected by this manufacturing defect. After doing extensive research, I have discovered there is a more or less "universal part" you can buy (GE part # is WR49X10173 -- it is called a "Dispenser Water Tube Heater Kit"). Before you make your purchase, you may want to check to be sure the kit is compatible with your frig. Anyway, GE is aware of this on-going problem in many of their refrigerators yet they refuse to step to the line and fix the problem at their expense! Instead, they leave it up to you, the consumer, to do the research and figure it out yourself! Apparently these refrigerators have a manufacturing defect wherein there is not enough insulation in the freezer door to prevent the water dispenser line from freezing up. First of all, let me say that we bought the frig in 2003 and have been without the use of the water-in-door feature for almost 5 years now. I was able to solve the problem temporarily today by turning on the freezer door outside ice/water door light and leaving it on all day long today. I also upped my freezer setting to #3 (making it not so cold). Apparently the heat from the door light created just enough heat to melt the frozen ice in the water line and the water is running perfectly fine now for the first time in FIVE FREAKIN' YEARS! That said, I would like the option to not have to leave the light on 24/7 just to keep the water dispenser working. Therefore, the next solution is to order the above part (cost is about $32-35 for the part) and have it installed. According to several people online, they installed it themselves and said it was a degree of difficulty of about a "4" on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the most difficult. Despite all that, I called GE Consumer Relations and demanded they send out a service tech AT THEIR EXPENSE to figure out what was causing the problem and that I did not want to ever be told again that the solution was to buy a new freezer door! They agreed to send out the tech next week (June 9th, 2009 to be exact). When he arrives I plan to tell him my long, boring story of this defective frig and at that time I will present him with the part I have already purchased and have him install it. Apparently it requires removing the plastic housing on the outside/front of the freezer door where the water and ice come out. I hope this info helps those of you who have suffered through not being able to enjoy the water feature in these expensive refrigerators. Strange that the ice has always worked fine .... the water dispenser was the problem. GOOD LUCK!!

GE has a water dispenser heater retrofit kit that will prevent the freezing. Please don't be angry with me I don't work for GE. Do they not know the part number? Click Here=> WR49X10173
Or here=> WR49X10173 or 1381601 Dispenser Water Tube Heater Kit
Yes GE should be accountable and there products have not become better. Sadly they follow LG in the accountability department. You do have a right to complain to GE and expose the problems and solutions that were offered to you from these so called technicians. A new freezer door cost as much as a new refrigerator! Sounds like the Technicians are not very well informed or certified to work on GE products.

Water dispenser does not work, any time it is used water just drains out of bottom of freezer area onto floor. Ice cubes works

Hello Melissa;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

I am sorry to say you have a serious problem.

The water supply line to your ice maker runs up the back of your refrigerator from the ice maker solenoid. It is a separate water supply line.

Your water dispenser water line runs from the water dispenser solenoid under your unit and up from the bottom of you freeze door.

You have a plastic tubing leak within your freezer door. Calling a service company to replace the freezer door tubing - a good service technician would not replace the tubing - the damage has already been done.

The insulating material in your freezer door is soaked. The water in the door will cause the door liner to expand and crack. There is no way to completely dry out the insulating material.
The only fix is to replace the freezer door. So, $300.00+ for the door and $150.00+ for the service tech. No, a hair dryer will not do it.

May I suggest:
1.) Remove the bottom toe plate (Kicker plate) in the front of your refrigerator.
2.) Turn the leveling screws counter clockwise so you can pull the refrigerator out to get behind it.
3.) Unplug the unit.
4.) Remove the screws from the bottom cover.
5.) There are two connectors to the solenoid valve to the water dispenser. It is the larger diameter tubing running under your refrigerator.
This will disable your water dispenser. If you see cracks on the inside of your freezer door, seal them with a high temperature silicone adhesive.

If you elect to purchase a new unit, check out Sears Outlet (Scratch & Dent) Stores.

Frezzer keeps icein over

Hello;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

There are several things to check:

1.) Door Gasket -Take a piece of paper. With the freezer door closed run the paper around the gasket. If you can do that, then you are not getting a good seal.
Repair: Clean the freezer door gasket with soap and water. While still wet, take a hair dryer and a spatula, going around the gasket, heat the gasket while pulling the gasket out to expand it.
Note: This only solves the problem if there is frost in the front area of your freezer.

2.) Freezer fan not working - In some cases, The freezer fan helps to prevent warm air from getting into the freezer.

3.) Food Storage - Make sure you do not overload the freezer, and that the food product is inside the bounds of the racks.

4.) Fresh Food Section Air Vent Wide Open - This is your probable cause: Heat goes to Cold like a magnet. When you open your fresh food section door and then close it you are forcing warm air up the vent that goes to the freezer. You probably have a broken air vent assembly.

Fridge and freezer at 50 degrees with settings on max cold. I can hear compressor cycling and all power is on. Suggestions?

Your Refrig/freezer should be set as follows:

Refrigerators: 36 to 40 degrees. Ideal temp is 37 Fahrenheit. Note: A temp above 42 degrees promotes bacteria.

Freezer: temp should be -5 to 6 degrees Fahrenheit. Ideal temp is 0 degrees.

Then check the door seals around the edges to see if any splits, tears or cracks have messed up the seal. This will cause your compressor to constantly run as it's trying to cool off the warm house is being sucked into the freezer (or Refrig). A sure sign the door seals are damaged is lots of ice in the freezer door area or water pooling in the bottom area of the refrigerator.

Wait about 4 hrs after you readjusted the Refrigerator/Freezer settings so everything settles down. If you still have problems then the coolant may need to be serviced (topped off) or the motor serviced/checked.

Don't procrastinate because a water heater and Refrig/freezer are the 2 largest energy users in your home- they run 24 hrs a day.

Hope this helps...

Dispensing ice not working but makes ice fine and water works also

If your refrigerator has an ice dispenser, you are probably used to getting ice right away when a lever or button
is pressed. However, if you depress the ice maker button and nothing dispenses, there is an issue with your
refrigerator. There are a few different reasons why an ice dispenser would suddenly not work. It is important to
troubleshoot your refrigerator first to determine the problem. Some problems can be fixed at home, while others
must be repaired by a professional.

1. Remove the ice bin from the freezer and press the button on the front of the refrigerator for cubed ice.
2. Open the freezer door and hold down the switch on the door, which "tricks" the freezer into thinking the door is
closed, and push the lever or button to dispense ice. The motor behind the ice bin should turn. If it does not,
this means the motor is frozen.
3. Remove the motor, following the directions in your refrigerator's manual. Heat and dry out the motor with a hairdryer until the motor turns again, then reinstall the motor according to the manufacturer's directions.

Have a nice & a happy day : ).

Ice maker doesn't work.model kbfa25erss01

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.

Often when ice-makers stop working the real problem is that the freezer is not cold enough (It must be 14-16F for the icemaker thermostat to cycle) Check for signs of ice or substantial frost in the back of the unit / evaporator coil area. If you have ice / frost in this area you should do a manual defrost by unplugging the unit and directing an external fan into the freezer compartment for about 2 hours while it makes a water mess that will need to be tended too. Once the 2 hour thawing is complete wipe up the excess water and return the unit to normal service. If the problem was caused by excess ice it will operate normall for 2 - 3 days before ice production slows or stops totally. Should the manual defrosting correct the icemaker problem you most likely have and automatic defrost problem in the form of a problem with one of these 3 components:
1. Defrost control
2. Defrost heating element
3. Defrost thermostat

Having said all of that... You can use this manual to check out your icemaker:
http://adcxns1.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/8527f904cc8ea8cd85256b5800672333/$FILE/4322658A.pdf

Make sure to test the coils on the inlet water valve for continuity. If one of the coils is open *** must be replaced. The inlet water valve is NOT repairable.

Your water valve can be found here:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/Appliance-Parts/whirlpool-water-inlet-valve-item-number-ap4080917.aspx

Here is another link on how to test out the icemaker:
http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=12&newsdesk_id=34

The ice-maker thermostat must be at or belw 16 F for the above tests to work.
NOTE the freezer door LIGHT switch must be taped down also.

Before you get too deep into troubleshooting checkout the freezer door light switch first. If the switch is bad the freezer compartment light will not work and the ice-maker also will not work.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

I have a Maytag side by side refrigerator model PSD2450GRW. The ice maker will not make ice but the water comes out front just fine. The freezer works and the ice maker is at the ON position. Thanks for...

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly. Usually when an ice maker slows or stops ice production it is a symptom of an aitomatic defrosting problem. The freezer must maintain 14 - 16 Deg F for the ice maker to make ice. Any temp above that an ice production stops. If the freezer is in the 14 - 16 deg F temp range then the problem can be the thermostat in the ice maker or the inlet water valve.

Here is simple test you can do at home to see if the inlet water valve is working:
1. Unlpug the unit for at least 10 minutes.
2. Remove the fiber board cover on the back of the unit.
3. Locate the inlet water valve and SWITCH the 2 connectors on the inler water valve.
4. Open the freezer door and hold the light switch button depressed. (or tape it down)
5. Take a glass and attempt to draw water through the door. Do this just long enout to realize water is going into the ice-maker.

^- NOTE the water will actually be going into the icemaker and the water valve is good!

If you have water going into the ice maker when you try water in door then the problem is either an automatic defrosting problem or an ice maker problem.

MAKE SURE TO RESTORE THE INLET WATER VALVE CONNECTORS to their original positons!

The ice maker can be tested using this link:
http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=12&newsdesk_id=34

If the icemaker checks out good then the freezer is too warm and there is some reasonthat the freezer is warming up. Usually this is caused one of the following:
1. Defrost control board. Item 13 this link:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=48135&diagram_id=28489467#d28489467

2. The defrost element and thermostat. Item 12 this link:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=48135&diagram_id=28489469#d28489469

The wiring diagram can be found here:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/frame_diagram.aspx?diagram_id=28489477&pkw_=basket&model_id=48135&NewWindow=1

Here is how I would approch troubleshooting on your unit:
1. Check out the icemaker using the american appliance link above.
2. Do a manual defrost by unplugging the unit and placeing a fan blowing into the freezer compartment for just over 2 hours. (Makes a water mess!)
3. Return the unit to normal service for a few days.

If it starts making ice..... you have an automatic defrost problem or... the evaporator fan is not running at full speed.

One last note... anytime you unplug the unit you must wait about 15 minutes for the cooling system to stabilze or the compressor will NOT start.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

Hello fergust
Welcome to Fixya,

You said, I have just purchased this unit and switch it on.After some 3 minutes error message appeared on the front door screen . Message ---- ER CF Neither fridge, freezer or ice maker are working. What is the problem.

Did you turn the refrigerator and freezer on to the proper cooling adjustments as in the user manual?
Is the ice maker hooked up to the water line and in the on position?
Did you use the free help line if you are doing it your elf?

While I look it up, you can try to reset the system by plugging the fridge for 5 minutes, or if you can not reach the plug, then throw the breaker for 5 minutes.
Not less than 3 minutes. That is why I sad, 5minutes.
Usually this will do it! let me know as I look up the error codes.

Check to see if the drain at the bottom of your freezer is plugged. When the refrigerator goes on defrost, the water has to go somewhere. Look below the coils in the freezer section and see if there is ice in the drain.
