I have used maker's recovery disc; but somehow have retained old screensaver and lost all desktop buttons whilst loading on Norton (which turned out to be out of date). I bought and dowloaded Norton 360, but, because my "backup" disc (prompted by Norton before probs. leading to use of recovery discs) will not load, and also the missing programmes which were connected to the desktop buttons are inaccessiblem
To me, my problem is if I re use the recovery discs, then newly bought Norton 360 will also be wiped off. How can I reinstall 360 (without paying again) after re use of recovery discs? I have a Norton order number and 35 digit product code.
Any help will be very welcome.
You will need to uninstall the OLD Norton after the recovery. Norton has an uninstall program that you will search to find on line called "Symantec Removal Utility"
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
download this and run it. DO NOT use the uninstall program that came with your Norton program.
Shut down completely for at least 30 seconds, and then restart.
Then do a search for 'all files and folders' - search for both Symantec and then Norton, with the options "Search system folders", "Search hidden files and folders" and "Search subfolders" checked. Delete all of those found.
You should do this search and delete whenever you uninstall any programs. It will remove lots and lots of leftover junk files taking up room on your hard drive. It will also give you a "clean install" when you reinstall or install an updated program. Do this ESPECIALLY when updating to a NEW anti-virus programs and “Internet Security Suite” programs such as McAfee or Norton etc.
Log on to the Norton website, with your password, you will then go to your "My Account" you will be able to download from there.
However if it has been over 6 months, then you will have to pay again, IF you did not pay the 'insurance". I don't pay that $6 charge -- I save a copy of all my downloads on my hard disk then to a CD or DVD.
RECOVERY with an OPTION to NOT install Old, Outdated, Replaced and Unused programs.
It certainly would be nice and save everyone LOTS of time and effort if... Microsoft, and PC manufacturers would add a few lines of code to their RECOVERY programs.
When doing a recovery you shouldn't have to install OLD - OUTDATED programs such as Symantec or McAfee, especially if you already own a newer copy of that program.
Why should you have to install programs that you never use during the recovery, just to uninstall later, just because it came originally on the computer?

Get in touch with symantec make sure you would be able to redownload it after you format your drive. Use file and setting wizard from start->programs->accessories->system tools to transfer your settings to removable media. Once you format and reinstall use wizard again to import your previous settings from removable media.
