Question about SimpleTech Signature Mini 320GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive - Dark Red Black Cherry

1 Answer

After a time, Computer not recognizing portable harddrive

I have a Signature Mini Black Cherry portable harddrive that I bought about 2 years ago. When I first plug it in, it does just fine, I can transfer files back and forth, and everything is grand. After a little while, the harddrive disconnects from my computer and I can no longer access it, although it is displaying that it has sufficient power to run. I don't have any vital files on there that I don't have stored other places, so reformatting is an option if needed, but I really would like to regain use of my portable hard drive! Can anyone help me, please?

first, check that it isn't overheating. is there dust, debris in the fan intake area? If there is, clean it out first. Are you storing any magnets close to this drive?

Reformatting will be our last option and there are a number of steps that you can try to fix this.

  • Try plugging it in on a different USB port
  • Check the USB cable, try replacing it and see if it works
  • USB ports on your computer makes use of power, so if you have multiple USB devices plugged in, the portable hard drive might not be receiving enough power. Try plugging it in without your other USB devices, except the mouse of course

Please leave me a comment for this.

Data recovery can be expensive the most expensive recovery labs may charge $2000. But for a 320GB drive you can get the data recovered for much less money.

This guy does data recovery remotely over the internet and works for donations http://FreeDataRecovery.us

External hard drives of this type are mainly composed of a USB-to-SATA interface & a 2.5" SATA hard drive. If any of these components is defective, then you won't be able to access your data.
So, basically we have 2 possibilities:
1. A failing USB-to-SATA interface. You can test this possibility by disassembling the device, taking the hard drive out, & testing the hard drive in your desktop computer using a 2.5" to 3.5" SATA adapter. If the hard drive works fine, then the problem lies within the USB-to-SATA interface.
3. In the previous step, if the hard drive could not be detected by your desktop computer or is not working properly, then it is the failing part.

I plug it to my computer and I get a message saying that USB Device Not Recognized. I Have plugged and unplugged about 50 times and I still can't get it to work.

Try installing a driver disc for it first or locate the driver for it. Then plug it in, or turn off your computer unplug the USB device then with computer unplugged from the wall hit the power button till it flashes or about 3-5 seconds is all then leave the USB device unplugged and restart the computer again get it up and settled down. Then put the USB in another USB port. Try this thanks for using FixYa John

Upgraded to win 7, now the black cherry, Signature 320 is no longer recognized and will not download a driver, is one available for Win 7, will not run in compatability settings.

No driver is required to use the drive. Try another cable or another port on the computer. If you are using it bus-powered, try using a USB "Y" cable as some computers cannot provide enough power through one port.
