5. Type your new name in the empty box below your old name and click "Save Changes." This will finalize your new email name. If you want to check your handiwork, send an email to a friend and see if it has been successfully changed.

Check out the internect connectivity on your computer this problem normally happens if there is a variance in the connection.
you can try some other browser apart from the one which you are using now and then check if the problem persists.

If you have configured your gmail setting to any password recovering email (any other email) or to a mobile phone it will be easy to reset the password. If not then you better try to create a new gmail here.

Probably the best and easiest solution is to set up email forwarding from your old account to your new account.
If not, you will need to basically download all your email from your old account and upload it to your new account. This will require some type of desktop email client and quite a bit of setup.

If you're not interested in moving your old email then you could just delete the old account.
