Cause

DEFINITION: A large engine RPM increase is noted in fourth gear, Drive range, with little or no vehicle forward speed increase. First, second, and third gear operation are normal. Shifts into fourth gear are soft or do not occur. Fourth gear ratio is 0.705:1.

Oil Filter Assembly
• The oil filter assembly (100) is missing, plugged, or damaged.
• The oil filter seal assembly (101) is missing or is damaged.

Control Valve Body Assembly
• The 3-4 shift valve (362) or the 4-3 manual downshift valve (360) is stuck or binding.
• Debris is found in the passages of the control valve body (301) or of the control valve body spacer plate and gasket assembly (396)

Case Cover Assembly
Distortion or damage occurs at the manual valve (404) or at the case cover (401), causing PRN oil leak.

Driven Sprocket Support Assembly
A plugged third clutch oil passage in the driven sprocket support assembly (609)

Fourth Clutch Assembly
• The clutch plates (500-502) are worn, damaged, or misassembled.
• A missing or not seated fourth clutch spring retaining ring (601)
• A damaged spring assembly (602) or piston (603)
• Worn or damaged fourth clutch piston seals (604, 605)

Third Clutch Sprag Assembly
• The sprag (720) was misassembled or backwards on the inner race (661).
• A damaged third clutch sprag assembly (653, 661, 719-721)

A lot of suggestions - however It could be one of numerous problems - worn sincro ring - however they would all be above your capacity to fix - consult a reputable auto shop - you need someone that knows what they are talking about to physically look at the car to solve the problem - this will save you a lot of time and expense and heartache. ?

4th cylinder might have a burnt valve, bad cam lobe, or bad piston rings.

This is a hard drive or DVD error. Try removing your HDD and starting it up. Does it work? If not, try replacing the optical drive.. see if you can salvage one from RROD'd 360 (i.e., 3 red rings, usually their GPUs died and their DVD drives are still OK). Replacing the optical drive is pretty simple once you determine this.

if its jumping out of fourth back into nuetral then you have 2 options,both involve taking out the gearbox.
1/replace the baulk ring on fourth gear or
2/ get a recon box(poss the easiest,as all rings/bearings will have been replaced).

First make sure how many lights are red, red ring of death with light up the player 1,3,and 4 slots. If all 4 are glowing try an av cable (sometimes rrd will look like all 4 are lit but look carefully and often the fourth slot is only reflected light). next log onto http://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/nxe/registerdevice.aspx?step=repair and enter your console information. If the rrd warranty is still active, they will repair it for free (rrd is warranteed far beyond the normal console warranty, so be sure to try this before opening your console).

How many slots for RAM in the motherboard?

If there are 4 slots, are the slots equally-spaced, or are they located as two pairs of slots, with a gap between the 3rd and 4th slot?

Some computers _REQUIRE_ RAM only in the 1st and 3rd slots, or only in the 2nd and 4th slots.

Some computers "beep" when 3 out of the 4 RAM slots are populated.

Some computers require the size of the RAM in the 1st slot to match the size of the RAM in the 3rd slot,
and the size of the RAM in the 2nd slot to match the size of the RAM in the 4th slot.

Does your computer "beep" when one stick is in the first slot, and the other slots are empty? How much RAM on that stick?

Does your computer "beep" when one stick is in the second slot, and the other slots are empty? How much RAM on that stick?

Does your computer "beep" when one stick is in the third slot, and the other slots are empty? How much RAM on that stick?

Does your computer "beep" when one stick is in the fourth slot, and the other slots are empty? How much RAM on that stick?

Does your computer "beep" when one stick is in the first slot and a matching stick is in the third slot, and the other slots are empty? How much RAM on those sticks?

assuming it is a manual transmission it sounds like a syncro ring is gone on 4th would require transmission rebuild

A common fault on the early R380 gearboxes was the 4th gear baulk ring. The slot locating the synchro slipper wears and allows the baulk ring to rotate too far. This blocks the synchro assembly. It will be necessary to rebuild the gearbox, and replacing the baulk ring with a later type will eliminate this fault.
